Lake downs Wynford, 72-69, advances to district

BUCYRUS — After trailing by three at the end of three quarters, Lake boys basketball scored 27 fourth quarter and overtime points to defeat Wynford, 72-69, in a Division III sectional final Friday and advance to the district tournament.

Jay Blazevich hit a three-pointer, Dylan Wiley and Travis Merrill made field goals, and Caleb Tobias hit two free throws in overtime to put the game away for the Flyers.

Lake (15-7) advances to the Norwalk High School district tournament where the Flyers will take on a familiar foe, Northern Buckeye Conference opponent Genoa, which defeated Oak Harbor, 34-30, to advance. Wynford bows out at 13-10.

The Flyers (17-7) and Comets (17-6) will play their district semifinal at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 6. In their two NBC meetings, Genoa defeated Lake twice by 75-61 and 55-45 scores.

The winner will get the Ashland Crestview (22-1)-Margaretta (21-3) winner at 1 p.m. on Saturday at Norwalk High School for the district championship and the right to advance to the regional tournament at Bowling Green State University.

In the win over Wynford, Preston Snyder led Lake with 16 points, Wiley and Merrill scored 15 apiece, Tobias scored nine, Carter Behlmer and Drew Tajblik scored six apiece, and Blazevich scored five points for the Flyers.

The Flyers had seven three-point goals, including two apiece by Snyder and Wiley, and they were 5-for-9 from the free throw line. Weston Prenger led Wynford with 18 points.
