Perrysburg’s Gahn advances to district bowling

MINSTER, Ohio — Perrysburg junior bowler Julia Gahn bowled a 487 series at Community Lanes, good enough to advance to the Division I district tournament as an individual.

Perrysburg coach Aaron Wozniak says Gahn was on a mission.

“Julia Gahn was bound and determined to make the district tournament this season,” Wozniak said.

“Last season in the Fremont sectional, she missed out qualifying as an individual by 14 pins. That is enough to light a fire under most people, but Julia set a concrete goal 365 days ago to make districts.”

She finished 15th overall, but was the fourth and last individual to qualify for districts. Gahn, a second team All-Northern Lakes League selection in her third season on the varsity, made sure she put in the time to be good enough to advance.

“Julia practices all the time. She is always in a bowling center working on her game,” Wozniak said.

“She shot games of 175-135-177 for a 487 series. Her middle game she ran into some struggles due to the oil transition, as well as the fact the tournament is bowled on a ‘challenge pattern.’

“The oil pattern is designed to be more difficult than the average house shot you would find on league night. So it puts an emphasis on good spare shooting.”

As a team, Perrysburg finished seventh out of 12 teams with 2,956 pins, 308 pins short of advancing.

“We all want to advance to districts as a team,” Wozniak said. “It’s a team sport, at least in high school.

“It’s more fun succeeding with your peers. But, in the event that your team does not shoot the number needed to advance, it’s a great feeling to represent your school as an individual.

“We were also competing in a far more competitive sectional in Minster, with the leading series being 732 from Olivia Miller from Lima Shawnee.”

Perrysburg bowled a team series of 745-676-708–2,129 and had baker games of 119-136-158-159-126-129–827.

Perrysburg senior Mackenzie Wozniak finished only a couple spots out of advancing with a 164-150-138–452 series, and senior Lydia Willams finished with a 134-159-123–416 series.

Perrysburg senior Karli Courtney had games of 131 and 122, senior Sydney Gankosky bowled a 148 game and junior Riley Bisnett bowled a 141 game. Other substitutions bowled games of 111 and 121 for the Yellow Jackets.

The top four teams that advanced were Shawnee (3,720), Celina (3,540), Wapakoneta (3,469) and Bryan (3,264).

Rounding out team standings were Springfield (3,211), Van Wert (3,007), Perrysburg, Findlay (2,621), Defiance (2,620), Lima Senior (2,588), Anthony Wayne (2,376) and Elida (2,329).
