Flyers hold off Eagles, 49-47, in NBC tilt

MILLBURY — Lake took a five-point lead into the fourth quarter and held on to defeat visiting Eastwood, 49-47, in a Northern Buckeye Conference boys basketball game Tuesday.

“It was back and forth more than I wanted it to be, but towards the end of it we got the ball into our playmakers’ hands and the guys we are confident in to shoot free throws,” Lake coach Luke Hickey said.

“It certainly wasn’t pretty but we found a way to win and that is what I am most proud of.”

For the Eagles (7-7 overall, 6-3 NBC), it is their second straight league loss as they fall out of a first place tie. Lake improves to 10-5 and 5-4.

Preston Snyder led Lake with 13 points, Caleb Tobias scored nine, and Dylan Wiley, Travis Merrill and Drew Tajblik scored six points apiece for the Flyers.

Jay Blazevich scored four points, Carter Belhmer hit a big fourth quarter three-point shot to account for his three points, and Jack Sobczak added two points for Lake.

Eastwood coach Jason Faykosh liked how his team held Lake to their lowest scoring output of the season.

“They are a real good shooting team. We held them to two threes in the game,” Faykosh said. “Defensively we did what we wanted to do. We wanted to keep it in the 40s, we defended really well and our effort was there.”

Faykosh just wishes his team had played better offensively so they would not have had to come back from a 28-21 halftime deficit.

“The thing that hurt us was turnovers, particularly in the first half. We turned the ball over quite a bit and gave them some easy opportunities in transition going the other way,” Faykosh said.

“We cleaned that up in the second half, but after a seven-point deficit going into halftime, we kind of shot ourselves in the foot that way.”

Dayquan Oliver and Andrew Badenhop led Eastwood with 13 points apiece, Andre Lewis scored 10 points, Drew Luidhardt scored five points, Drew Kachmarik scored three points, Caleb Souder scored two points, and Kadyn Donnell added one point.
