The Wood County Sheriff’s Office will be kicking off a new project called Christmas Spectacular.

This event was brought to the office from partnerships with the Genesee County Sheriff’s Office out of Michigan and extended to include Wood County as well as the Sandusky County Sheriff’s Office.

The Wood County Sheriff’s Office will be partnering with the Bowling Green State University men’s basketball team in their project and will be surprising recipients by delivering pre-packaged boxes that include toys and household items to families throughout all of Wood County who may be in need.

“We were approached by our friends Sheriff Swanson and Major Gould from the Genesee County Sheriff’s Office about this project they have been conducting for a few years now, and they asked us and the Sandusky County Sheriff if we would like to spread this Christmas Spectacular to our own communities here in Ohio,” said Wood County Sheriff Mark Wasylyshyn.

“We have families who may be struggling, and having the opportunity to show our citizens that our office isn’t only caring for them in time of tragedy, or turmoil – but randomly giving them a blessing before the holidays that may help them, will be so impactful on our deputies to give back,” he said.

The Christmas Spectacular is executed in two phases. In phase one, completed Thursday morning, the basketball players and staff met up with the sheriffs at a Bowling Green warehouse to organize and box the gifts for the families. Boxes included toys for kids, household necessities, blankets, coats, and other smaller items that families may need.

In phase two next week, the team will drive around with the sheriffs to help distribute the gifts to all those families who need it. The objective is to present a family with a box of goods, and anything that family does not want or need, they will return to the box for another family to have.
