PEMBERVILLE — Eastwood senior Kayla Buehler had 19 points and six steals and senior Amelia Ward had 13 points, four steals and six rebounds as the Eagles routed visiting Lake, 54-23, in Northern Buckeye Conference action Wednesday.

The Eagles never trailed, opening with a 20-2 run and forcing a running clock in the fourth quarter.

“We have a mindset that every NBC win is a Super Bowl win, so we kind of take it one game at a time,” Ward said. “All of our mindsets were clear today. We came in with a dominance mindset and how can we take care of teams.”

The Eagles shot 51% (22-for-43) from the field and got eight players into the scoring column while improving their overall record to 3-1 and remaining a perfect 2-0 in the NBC. Lake fell to 1-3 and 1-1.

“I think we knew that we had to be focused,” Eastwood coach Brittany Butler said. “This is a big league game coming in and I thought our girls did a really good job of focusing in practice the last few days.

“They knew they wanted to take care of business, share the ball, we got after it defensively, and transitionally we did some really good things. It was an all-around great team win.”

Eastwood senior Paige Hoodlebrink had six points, six rebounds and two steals, sophomore Piper Sutton scored five points, and junior Jordan Jensen had four points, five rebounds and two steals.

Eastwood freshman Harper Rollins-Morlock, senior Reilly Might and junior Mallory Sandberg added two points each to round out the Eagles’ scoring.

The Eagles made 6-of-13 free throws, had 22 turnovers to Lake’s 29, and outrebounded the Flyers 32-20. Lake shot 24% (9-for-37) from the field and made 5-of-12 free throws.

Sophomore forward Kaydence Eckenrode led Lake with nine points and three steals and freshman guard Brooke Wiley scored eight points.

Freshman forward Savannah Little had four points, five rebounds and two steals and senior forward Elena Longoria scored two points for the Flyers.

Lake coach Joe Nowak hopes his team can rebound from the 31-point loss.

“This was definitely a game that we feel a little frustrated by,” Nowak said. “We certainly weren’t able to do some of the things we need to do in order to be successful, but I think a lot of credit for that goes to Eastwood. They played like the better team tonight and they were the aggressors and it showed.
“I think there were times that we looked like a very young and inexperienced team tonight, but at the end of the day we need to execute at both ends better than what we did tonight.
“There’s certainly some areas that need a lot of improvement for us. Unfortunately, we’re getting into a busy segment of our schedule so we don’t have much practice time to work on everything we need to. So we’re going to have to do the best we can to make adjustments and learn as we go.”
