Eastwood’s Ward, Zura earn All-Ohio accolades

Three Eastwood girls soccer players, senior defender Amelia Ward, sophomore midfielder Piper Sutton, and senior attacker Delaine Zura are first team All-Northern Buckeye Conference selections.

Ward and Zura are also second team Division III All-Ohio selections and first team All-Northwest Ohio honorees while Sutton is second team All-NW Ohio.

The trio helped Eastwood to its sixth straight NBC title, although the Eagles shared the title with Oak Harbor and Maumee. Oak Harbor senior midfielder Hollie Robinson, a first team All-Northwest Ohio and second team All-Ohio selection, is the NBC Player of the Year.

It is Maumee’s first-ever girls soccer league championship in school history, coming in the Panthers’ first season in the NBC after moving from the Northern Lakes League.

Eastwood, ranked 14th in the final D-III state coaches’ poll, finished 16-4-1 overall and reached the Division III regional final, losing to eventual state runner-up and No. 2 ranked Ottawa Glandorf, 3-0. Maumee was 15-7, Oak Harbor was 12-5-1, and all three co-championship teams had 5-1 league records.

Genoa (13-6-1, 3-3) finished fourth, followed by Lake (5-7-4, 2-4), Otsego (8-11, 1-5) and Rossford (4-13-1, 0-6).

Also first team from Wood County are Lake senior attacker Brianna Braatz and Otsego junior midfielder Kaylee Eberly. Braatz joins Robinson as a second team All-Ohioan. Braatz and Eberly were also first team All-NW Ohio in Division II

Eastwood had four All-NBC second team selections in senior defender Reilly Might, senior defender Kayla Buehler, senior midfielder Abby Rothenbuhler, and senior attacker Saylor King. Might is also a second team All-NW Ohio honoree.

Other NBC second team selections from Wood County include Lake junior defender Adeana Cowell, Otsego freshman attacker Ryleigh O’Brien, and Rossford junior goalkeeper Madison Kutscher.

Wood County honorable mention choices are Otsego junior defender Morgen Hillesheim, Lake freshman defender Brooke Wiley, Rossford senior midfielder Mallory Bartley, Lake freshman defender Savannah Little, Eastwood freshman attacker Ava Kachmarik, Rossford sophomore defender Camryn Almester, Lake sophomore defender Penelope Garcia, Eastwood sophomore midfielder Kenna Nelson, Otsego freshman attacker Cailyn Lorenz, and Eastwood junior goalkeeper Jordan Jensen.

O’Brien is also second team All-NW Ohio in D-II and HM All-NW Ohio choices include Cowell, Hillesheim and Rossford’s Camryn Almester and Kutscher.

Merrill, Reed, Vargo first team All-NBC

Maumee junior forward Blake Wagener was the All-NBC and All-Northwest Ohio Division II boys Player of the Year after leading the Panthers to an outright league championship.

Wagener finished the season with 127 points on 54 goals and 19 assists and was a first team Division II All-Ohio selection.

Maumee finished the season 19-1-1 overall and 6-0 in the NBC. Lake (12-5-1, 4-1-1) finished in second, followed by Eastwood (4-13-1, 3-2-1), Genoa (8-9-2, 3-3), Otsego (2-12-3, 1-3-2), Rossford (3-13-2, 1-4-1) and Oak Harbor (5-11-3, 0-5-1).

Wood County first team selections include Lake junior forward/midfielder Travis Merrill, Lake junior midfielder/defender Greyson Reed, and Rossford junior midfielder/cornerback Alex Vargo. Vargo was also second team All-NW Ohio in D-II and Reed is first team and Merrill is second team All-NW Ohio in D-III

Lake had five players chosen to the All-NBC second team — junior midfielder Micah Balsmeyer, sophomore midfielder Preston Snyder, senior forward Jack Gladieux, senior forward Augie Wharton and junior defender Jon Specht.

Second team selections also include Otsego senior midfielder Hudson Thomas and junior midfielder Walker Waitt, Eastwood senior corner back Eli Good, and Rossford senior midfielder Landon Reiter.

Wood County HM all-league choices include senior defender Gael Rios, Lake senior defender Figgy Garcia, and sophomore goalkeeper Mitchell Maguire. Rossford junior corner back Xavier Boyd, junior midfielder Brandon Baum, and junior forward Nicolo Cassano, Otsego junior defender Zack Eilert and junior goalkeeper Dylan Jones and Eastwood junior goalkeeper Eric Sander.

For Eastwood, Good, Nolan Taylor, and Hunter Wilson were HM All-NW Ohio and Balsmeyer and Snyder were HM All-NW Ohio for Lake.
