Otsego, BG football seasons come to an end

OAK HARBOR — Otsego saw its season end at 4-7 with a first round Division V playoff loss to undefeated Oak Harbor (11-0). 49-20, on Friday.

Oak Harbor, the Northern Buckeye Conference champions, opened a 21-0 first quarter lead before Otsego got on the board on a 14-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Kaidyn Hutton to 6-foot-3, 200-pound senior wide receiver Jack Simpson.

Hutton threw a two-point conversion pass to senior receiver Owen Atkinson, bringing the Knights to within two possessions, 21-8, early in the second quarter.

However, Oak Harbor scored three times unanswered in the third and fourth quarters to pull away.

Early in the fourth, Hutton threw a 14-yard TD pass to Simpson and later in the fourth senior Devin Farley scored on a two-yard run.

Oak Harbor ran for 386 yards and threw for 85, while Otsego ran 27 and threw for 142. The Rockets doubled the Knights in first downs, 22-11.

Hutton completed 12-of-22 passes for 142 yards but had one interception. Simpson caught six passes for 86 yards, Atkinson had two catches for 35 yards, Farley had three catches for 18 yards, and Kenton Wallace had a catch for three yards.

On the ground, Otsego running back Jordyn Barnett had 25 yards on 10 carries. On defense, Simpson had an interception, which he returned five yards.

Jaqui Hayward led Oak Harbor with 147 yards on five carries with three touchdowns, Dalton Witter had 105 yards on 15 carries, and Carson Ridener had 67 yards on eight carries with two touchdowns.

Caiden Lippus had 38 yards on six carries with one TD, Wyatt Augsburger had a run for 17 yards, and quarterback Michael Lalonde had two carries for 12 yards. Lalonde completed 9-of-16 passes for 85 yards with one TD and one interception.

Hayward had six catches for 46 yards, Braxtin Witt had a TD catch for 28 yards, and Ethan Stokes had a catch for 12 yards. Hayward also had the interception on defense for the Rockets.

Oak Harbor hosts Marengo Highland (6-5), 21-17 winners over Liberty-Benton, in a regional quarterfinal this Friday.

Toledo Central Catholic 42, Bowling Green 7

TOLEDO — Bowling Green saw its football season end Friday to the state’s No. 1 ranked team, Central Catholic, 42-7, in the Division III playoffs at Gallagher Stadium.

After a 4-1 start, BG sees its season end at 5-6.

The 11-0 Fighting Irish, Detroit Catholic High School League football champions in their first year competing and also the Detroit Prep Bowl winners after defeating the Detroit City League public school champions (48-23 over Cass Tech) at Ford Field, now host Defiance (8-3) in a regional quarterfinal this Friday. Central is the defending D-II state champions.

BG managed eight first downs, 58 yards rushing and 34 yards passing against the Central defense, but were able to get on the board on a two-yard run by quarterback Jamison Horst with 4:31 remaining in the first half.

Ja’ceous Shannon led BG’s running game with 18 yards on seven carries, Peyton Harris had 16 yards on 18 carries, Colby Joseph had 16 yards on three carries, and Horst had eight yards on eight carries.

Horst completed 7-of-11 passes for 34 yards, his longest a nine-yard completion to Harris. Harris caught three passes for 18 yards, Shannon had three catches for 12 yards, and Joseph had a catch for four yards.

Central scored first on a six-yard run by Marquan Braswell just one minute and nine seconds after the opening kickoff.

Just over two minutes later, Jayden Barnes scored after recovering a blocked punt and returning it three yards, putting the Irish up 14-0 with 9:50 remaining in the first quarter.

In the second quarter, Central quarterback Terry Collins threw a 41-yard TD pass to Jaylen Watson and Braswell scored on an eight-yard run, putting the Irish ahead, 35-7, at the half.

Tyler Morgan scored on a 15-yard for Central’s final TD just 56 seconds after the second half kickoff.
