BG police respond to explosion, confiscate powder

Bowling Green police confiscated chemical compounds after an explosion in the city.

On Saturday at 9:36 a.m., police responded to the 200 block of Leroy Avenue for a report of an explosion that had occurred the previous night around 7:40.

The complaint told police there had been explosion outside a nearby garage and she had Net cam footage of the incident. She also provided a small bag which contained exploded plastic pieces found on her property after the explosion, according to the Bowling Green Police Division report.

An officer went to the neighbor’s home and was told by a resident that a man who lives with there was making “bombs.”

The man stepped outside and told officers he had passed online classes and the test for a pyrotechnics license but hadn’t taken the final written certificate exam due to the cost, according to the report.

He led officers to the detached garage where he said he makes the compound.

A wooden crate with 18 individual bags on different powder chemicals were found as were several small tubular objects with wicks, according to the report.

The man told officers he was mixing the explosive compound in his blender when he ran out of standard aluminum powder, so he decided to use Magnalium instead. When he plugged in the blender using a long extension cord, it exploded.

BGPD called the Toledo police bomb squad, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the state fire marshal. The bomb squad responded and x-rayed the located explosives and reported they were normal ingredients for fireworks and there were no BBs, nails or projectiles, according to the report.

No charges were filed but may be pending.
