Governor Mike DeWine has announced that Chancellor Randy Gardner of the Ohio Department of Higher Education (ODHE) has notified him of his intention to retire on Dec. 31 after a long career in public service.

“I want to thank Chancellor Gardner for his years of service to the people of the state of Ohio. As a legislator and as chancellor, Randy Gardner has worked hard to make educational opportunities more accessible and to encourage cooperation of our institutions to work hand-in-hand with industries such as Intel to ensure that Ohio has the workers ready to fill the jobs of the future,” said DeWine.

Gardner, of Bowling Green, formerly served as a Republican member of the Ohio Senate, serving the 2nd District from 2013–2018. He formerly held the same district from 2001 to 2008, and was a member of the Ohio House of Representatives from 1985 to 2000, and from 2008 to 2012. In January 2019, Dewine appointed Gardner as the Chancellor of the Ohio Department of Higher Education.

He taught history and government at Otsego High School from 1981-1986.

“Serving in the cabinet has been an extraordinary experience. The DeWine-Husted administration has established an unmistakable ‘all of the above’ approach toward supporting students, which is critical to meeting Ohio’s emerging workforce needs,” saidGardner. “I am grateful for the opportunity to serve, and for the governor’s remarkable leadership.”
