MILLBURY – The Bowling Green Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating a non-injury crash involving a semi-tractor tanker combination and a train that occurred this morning at 8:38 a.m. on southbound Fostoria Road near Ohio 795.

The preliminary investigation showed a Freightliner semi-tractor tanker combination, operated by William J. Herrod, 26, Toledo, was driving southbound on Fostoria Road when it was struck by a westbound train.

Before the crash occurred, the Freightliner was crossing the railroad tracks after an eastbound train had cleared the crossing and the gates went up. As the Freightliner was crossing the tracks, the gates came down as a westbound train approached.

The gate came down in between the cab of the tractor and trailer.

Herrod exited his vehicle before the westbound train struck it.

According to the Lake Township Fire social media page, there was no spill from the tanker and the train didn’t derail.

The tanker was hauling an aluminum sulfate, a corrosive liquid used in the water treatment process.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol was assisted at the scene by the Lake Township Police Department, Lake Township Fire, Norfolk Southern Police Department and Pat & Son Towing.

The crash remains under investigation and no charges have been filed at this time.
