Knights nip Bobcats in five-set thriller

Bowling Green took two of the first three sets, but Otsego bounced back to take sets four and five, defeating the host Bobcats in a thriller Saturday, 25-16, 20-25, 19-25, 25-18, 18-16.

The Knights are 2-1 on the season while the Bobcats fall to 2-2.

Senior outside hitter Emily Genson led Otsego with 17 kills and two block assists and senior outside hitter Kendall St. John had four aces to lead the Knights.

Otsego senior setter and opposite hitter Faith Keifer had two solo blocks, senior middle blocker Kora Rollins had six block assists, sophomore six-rotation player Kayla McCabe had three BA, and junior middle blocker Sam Lehr had two BA.

Sophomore setter Cassie Bunde led the Knights in setting with 18 assists and Keifer had 12 assists. On defense, freshman Molly Kramer had 27 digs, Genson had 24 digs, and senior Addysen Limes had 21 digs for the Knights.

For BG, senior OPP Brooke Lavey led her team with 12 kills, two solo blocks, and three digs, senior setter Katelyn Barnhart had 25 assists, 15 digs, and one ace, and junior defensive specialist Hanna Heinze had 30 digs and two aces.

Eastwood 3, Defiance 0

DEFIANCE — Visiting Eastwood swept Defiance, 27-25, 25-22, 25-11, in the Eagles’ volleyball season opener Saturday. Defiance falls to 1-2.

For the Eagles, Kyrie Henline had nine digs, Paige Hoodlebrink had eight digs, Nadia Miller had nine kills and three blocks, and Mackenna Miller had 11 kills.

For Defiance, Karleigh Hoffman had 16 kills, Josslyn Jerger had six aces, Jasmyn Saldana had 16 assists, and Ella Westrick had 14 digs.

Eastwood 2, Woodmore 1

PEMBERVILLE — Eastwood and Woodmore girls soccer played to a scoreless tie at halftime, but the Eagles got goals from senior Delaine Zura and freshman Ava Kachmarik to defeat the Wildcats, 2-1, on Saturday.

Zura and Kachmarik also had Eastwood’s only assists, and freshman Kaitlin Abbey had four saves for the Eagles. Kelsey Kaylor scored the Wildcats’ only goal. Woodmore suffered its first loss in three games.

Eastwood improves to 1-1 after opening the season with a 4-2 loss to Liberty-Benton on the Eagles’ pitch on August 22.

In that game, Zura and Kachmarik also had the Eagles’ only goals and only assists, and Abbey had six saves.

For Liberty-Benton, senior Amelia Clymer scored twice and senior Emma Hooper and freshman Ally Ferris scored one goal apiece.

Lake 2, Lima Shawnee 2

MILLBURY — Briana Braatz scored twice as Lake tied visiting Lima Shawnee in girls soccer Saturday, including the game-tying goal as Lake trailed 2-1 at halftime.

The Flyers are 0-1-1 and Shawnee is 0-0-2 after opening the season tying Bowling Green, 1-1. Lauren Tobias had seven saves for the Flyers.
