Nutrition education: Dining with Diabetes

0

The Wood County Extension Office will be conducting a Dining with Diabetes series this fall.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention just released the latest statistics on diabetes. Approximately 13 % of US adults have diabetes (21% unaware of the diagnosis). 35% of US adults have pre diabetes (85% are unaware they have it). That means 48% of the adults have blood sugars above target. Uncontrolled diabetes can lead to future complications.

Dining with Diabetes is a cooking school and nutrition education program designed for people with diabetes and their family members or caregivers. In a series of four classes, participants learn how to incorporate good, healthy cooking techniques and other practices into their own kitchens to help manage their blood glucose.

At Dining with Diabetes:

· Watch live cooking demos

· Sample delicious and easy recipes

· Gain new insights on healthy eating

· Learn new skills to manage your diabetes

· Have discussions with a Registered Dietitian and Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist

Anyone with concerns about diabetes or interested in controlling blood sugar, as well as a family member, friend, caregiver or other support person would benefit from this program.

Classes are free for Wood County residents, however seating is limited and on a first-come basis. For residents outside of Wood County, there is a $40/person registration fee.

Register with Shannon Smith by calling 419-819-3078 or emailing [email protected]

Classes will be held on Tuesdays: Oct. 31, Nov. 7, 14 and 21 from noon-2 p.m. in the Wood County Extension office, 639 S. Dunbridge Road, Suite 1.
