Former Wayne man in jail for assault is sentenced for failing to appear

A former Wood County man found guilty of assault in 2020 is going to prison after he failed to meet with adult probation.

Shaun Aurand, 27, was transported from the Seneca County jail Tuesday to the courtroom of Wood County Common Pleas Judge Matt Reger.

Court documents show Aurand reported being in the hospital and couldn’t make an April 13 office appointment with adult probation.

He was instructed to call the officer before he left the hospital. He failed to appear for appointments scheduled for April 20 then April 21 and failed to explain his absence.

This was the second time that Aurand absconded from community control.

Defense attorney Scott Coon said his client was under indictment in Seneca County for obstructing official business and that he thinks Aurand will be sentenced to treatment at a recovery center.

Coon asked Reger to continue Aurand’s current sentence, which is community control, with the condition he successfully complete a recovery center program then enter sober living.

If he isn’t admitted into the recovery program, then prison is an option, Coon said.

Wood County Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Brian Boos said Aurand’s pattern of behavior shows that he should be incarcerated.

Recovery centers are for people who are willing to be rehabilitated, he said.

Aurand said he should have entered a sober living establishment after being released from SEARCH, but returned to the same place where people do drugs.

He said he has nowhere to live.

“I was scared to ask for help. No one wants to help me anymore because I don’t help myself,” he said.

Reger said that Aurand has been on community control sanctions since May 8, 2020. After the first violation, he was sent to SEARCH. He was kept under community control after a second violation.

Here we go again, Reger said.

“When we sentenced you, we gave you an opportunity,” he said.

Aurand was living in Wayne when he was accused of causing or attempting to cause physical harm to a public official who was performing his official duties.

The incident occurred Dec. 21, 2018, and he was sentenced to three years of community control in May 2020.

Reger imposed a sentence of 16 months in the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction and said he may consider early release into a recovery program.
