Cygnet man dies in two-vehicle crash

RUDOLPH — A Cygnet man is dead after a two-vehicle crash Sunday morning on Rudolph Road near Powell Road in Liberty Township.

The Wood County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the 7:36 a.m. crash involving a 2020 Ram pickup truck and a 2005 Buick LaCrosse sedan.

The investigation showed that the truck was traveling northbound on Rudolph and the Buick was traveling southbound on Rudolph.

The Buick attempted to pass a vehicle ahead and entered the lane of travel of the Ram. Both the truck and sedan attempted to avoid the crash but were unable to do so, according to the sheriff’s office. The Buick slid, causing the Ram to strike the LaCrosse on the passenger side, according to the news release.

The operator of the Buick, Austin A. Ogg, 22, Cygnet, was pronounced dead at the scene.

A passenger in the Buick, Markis Higley, 20, Leipsic, was transported to Mercy Health-St. Vincent Medical Center in Toledo in critical condition.

Neither man was wearing a seatbelt, according to the sheriff’s office.

The operator of the Ram, Justus Chapa, 23, Wauseon, who was wearing his seatbelt, sustained minor injuries and was treated at the scene and released.

Assisting at the scene were Central-Joint Fire Department, Mid-County 120 EMS, Weston EMS, Frank’s Automotive, Tommy Boy Towing and the Wood County Highway Garage.

The crash remains under investigation.
