Grease is the word in Grand Rapids

GRAND RAPIDS — The Grand Rapids Historical Society is continuing the quarter-century-long tradition of producing a summer musical.

Join the cast and crew from local high schools, colleges and communities in Northwest Ohio at the historic town hall on Front Street for the show this week.

The performances of “Grease” will be on Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m. (doors open at 6:30 p.m.), and on Sunday at 2 p.m. (doors open at 1:30 p.m.).

Tickets cost $12 for adults and $10 for students and seniors and are available for purchase at the Village Orchard in Grand Rapids, Tiedtke’s Coffee in Maumee, and will also be available at the door before the performances.

Ride the Trail with a Park Officer on Thursday from 7-8:30 p.m. at the Black Swamp Preserve, 1014 Maple St.

Join a park officer for a leisurely ride down the Slippery Elm Trail. There will be time for conversation before and after the ride to ask about their role at the park district. The round-trip distance will be a 9-mile ride to the Rudolph Bike Park and back.

A Fire by the River is Friday from 7-9 p.m. at Otsego Park, 20000 W. River Road. Enjoy a campfire, s’mores and pie-iron creations along the Maumee River. Play yard games and view wildlife with binoculars and spotting scopes. Practice outdoor skills with a park naturalist.

Monthly Mindfulness is Saturday from 9:30-11 a.m. at W.W. Knight Nature Preserve, 29530 White Road, Perrysburg. Classes consist of a combination of seated and walking mindfulness practices and nature awareness activities.

Stargazing with the Toledo Astronomical Association is set for Saturday at 9 p.m. at Beaver Creek Preserve, 23028 Long Judson Road, Grand Rapids. See stars and nebula.

Paddle the Pond on Monday from4-7:30 p.m. at W.W. Knight Nature Preserve, 29530 White Road, Perrysburg. An instructor will be available for introductory safety and skills education. All boats, life-jackets and paddles provided. Canoes, kayaks and gear are available on a first-come-first-served basis.

BGSU seeks artist submissions for art show

Celebrating the talents of regional artists, Bowling Green State University Art Galleries seeks submissions for the 16th annual Northwest Ohio art show, which runs July 14-Aug. 4 at the BGSU Fine Arts Center.

Artists 16 and older from Wood, Defiance, Erie, Fulton, Hancock, Henry, Lucas, Ottawa, Paulding, Sandusky, Seneca and Williams counties are invited to submit up to one entry for exhibition.

Artists are eligible for up to $2,000 in cash prizes and gift certificates, and awards will be given for Best of Show, Young Artist and People’s Choice. Entry fees are $5 for artists ages 16-18 and $15 for artists 19 and older. Registration is available online until Friday, June 30.

This year’s show will be judged by Melissa Ladd, a graduate of the BGSU art history master’s degree program.

The NOW OH art show opening reception is 6-9 p.m. on July 14, with a gallery talk by Ladd at 6:30 p.m.

Gallery hours are Tuesday-Saturday from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. and Sunday from 1-4 p.m. with free parking daily after 6 p.m. and on weekends in Lot N on the BGSU campus.

Sponsored by the Ohio Arts Council, the BGSU School of Art and local businesses, the NOW OH art show is free and open to the public.
