Perrysburg rebounds to win three straight

PERRYSBURG — Perrysburg pitchers Maison Gerrard and Maddie Von Sacken combined to limit Sylvania Southview to two hits in leading the Yellow Jackets to an 11-0 complete game shutout victory Friday.

The Yellow Jackets then won two games on Saturday, defeating host Defiance, 11-3, and Bryan, 5-1, to improve to 11-1 on the season.

The Yellow Jackets are 3-1 in the Northern Lakes League after defeating Southview, rebounding from a 14-12 conference loss to defending Division I state runner-up Springfield on Wednesday.

Against the Cougars, Gerrard struck out three, walked none, and allowed two hits and no runs through five innings in earning the victory. She threw 42 pitches, including 31 strikes, while facing 14 batters.

Von Sacken closed in the fifth, striking out two, walking none and not allowing a hit and run in facing the minimum three batters. She needed just 10 pitches, throwing seven for strikes.

At the plate, Gerrard was 2-for-3 with two doubles and two RBIs, Hayley Griggs was 2-for-3 with two doubles, a stolen base and two RBIs, and Ella Leonard had a home run and two RBIs.

Lexie Vaillant had a base hit for the Jackets, Riley Doria reached base after getting hit by a pitch, and Morgan Hoverman reached on two walks, scored three runs, and had three stolen bases.

Getting base hits for the Cougars were Emma Jacobs and Lacie Filas. Paige DeShetler started in the circle, taking the loss, and Ashley O’Loughlin closed as the two combined for no strikeouts, four walks, allow six hits and eight earned runs.

In the win over Defiance Saturday, Von Sacken struck out four, walked one, and allowed seven hits and three runs in seven innings to get the win.

The Yellow Jackets outhit the Bulldogs, 15-7, as Hoverman was 4-for-5 with a triple, two stolen bases and two RBIs, Von Sacken went 2-for-3 with three RBIs, Yesenia You was 3-for-4 with an RBI, and Cassie Plummer was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.

Jess Miller had a double and Gerrard, Griggs, and Sophie Halm had base hits. Halm, Von Sacken, and Alyssa Bradford had sacrifice bunts, and Bradford reached after getting hit by a pitch. Lily Hinkleman, Griggs and You also had stolen bases for Perrysburg.

Defiance, which falls to 9-4, was led by Elizabeth Hoffman, who was 2-for-4, and Lindsay Roth was 2-for-3 with a triple. Ayvah Cullen had a double and two RBIs.

Tayla Escamilla tripled and had an RBI and Bella Gutierrez had a base hit and stolen base for the Bulldogs. Vivian King-Mayeku reached after getting hit by a pitch.

Escamilla started in the circle, striking out one, walking two, allowing 11 hits and nine earned runs through five innings. Brooke Gathman closed, not striking out or walking anyone, but she allowed four hits and two earned runs through two innings.

Gerrard pitched in Perrysburg’s win over Bryan, striking out eight, walking two, and allowing seven hits and one run through seven innings.

Bryan scored a single run in the top of the first inning to take an early lead, but the Jackets matched that with one of their own in the first, and added one in the second, two in the fourth, and one in the fifth.

Hoverman was 2-for-4 with a stolen base and two RBIs, Gerrard was 2-for-4 with an RBI, Miller was 2-for-3 with a double and RBI, and Aly Seuberling was 2-for-2 with a double.

Griggs and Plummer had base hits, Plummer and Seuberling laid down sacrifice bunts, Griggs was hit by a pitch and Miller had a stolen base.

For Bryan, which suffers its first loss and falls to 10-1, Thea Staten started in the circle, striking out three, walking two, allowing nine hits and five runs through five innings. Katelan Nagel closed pitching one inning of scoreless softball.

At the plate, Staten was 2-for-3 with a double and RBI, Ella Voigt was 2-for-4, and Mackenzie Blevins, Caitlynn DeWitt and Reese Grothaus had base hits. Staten also reached after getting hit by a pitch.
