7 applicants to be interviewed for BG superintendent

Bowling Green City Schools will interview seven candidates for the position of superintendent.

The board of education met in executive session for two hours Wednesday to review the 16 applications that were received.

Cheryl W. Ryan, director of Board and Management Services with Ohio School Boards Association, confirmed on Thursday interviews with the seven candidates.

That list includes:

• Kim Brueck, director of Human Resources and Student Services, Green Local Schools, south of Akron

• Ted Haselman, superintendent, Pike-Delta-York Local Schools, in Fulton County

• Maura Horgan, assistant superintendent, Newark City Schools, east of Columbus

• Mark Kowalski, superintendent, Liberty-Benton Local Schools, west of Findlay

• Bruce Otley, operations director, Liberty-Benton Local Schools

• Mark Pugh, high school principal, Sylvania City Schools

• Ryan Wilde, high school principal, Napoleon Area City Schools

The board took the information provided by discussions held with the community, business leaders, staff and board members in order to pick these names, said board President Ryan Myers.

The candidates were rated by OSBA and discussed individually Wednesday, he said.

“The seven that we chose are the ones we feel best represent the values of the board as well as the focus groups,” he said.

Superintendent Francis Scruci announced in January his intent to resign July 31.

Scruci was hired in April 2015 and replaced Ann McVey. He previously had been superintendent of the Gahanna-Jefferson City Schools in Franklin County.

First-round interviews will start the week of April 17.

The format for the second round of interviews is to be decided, Myers said.

“There’s a desire to make sure we’re as detailed and meticulous as possible,” he said.

The goal is to name the new superintendent in May.

“We’re happy with the candidate pool that we have and we’re really excited about this whole process,” Myers said.
