There are some people who are offended by others with what they say and what they believe.
There are also people who are just plain rude. Maybe it’s because they never learn how to be nice and pleasant. Or maybe these people just don’t care. No matter what, being rude and offensive and even insensitive is not illegal or unconstitutional.
The First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution gives us the freedom of speech. That includes the freedom to be rude, offensive and insensitive. Among many other things, that is what freedom gives us.
But those people who are so firm on being politically correct won’t allow anyone to be offended by anything they disagree with.
If the wrong word is used, or an unacceptable tone of voice is used, they will make a major case of it. If someone uses the wrong pronoun regarding anyone, he or she will be chastised, sued or maybe even lose employment. There will be no questions asked, no due process. So much for the First Amendment. There are people who value their agenda and priorities over the rule of law. That is not what this nation stands for.
What we as a nation need to do is refresh our knowledge and understanding of the U.S. Constitution. We will not always agree with everyone, but we need to respect others opinions and beliefs. That is what America is. That is what being a “melting pot” means. Historically our nation welcomed all who sought a better life, with freedom and liberty.
It wasn’t always easy, but with determination and a healthy respect for the laws, the newcomers settled in, worked hard and prospered. They didn’t expect any handouts from the government. The only help they received was from U.S. citizens, certain groups and churches.
And yes, there was discrimination, but the immigrants dealt with that, worked around it and still were able to prosper. There was offensive talk and actions, much rudeness — it wasn’t and isn’t right, but unfortunately it is part of human nature, It is also part of the freedom of speech. To make certain words and phrases “illegal” violates the First Amendment. Being rude, offensive and insensitive may be poor behavior, perhaps even immature, but this is not unconstitutional or illegal, not in our free country.
Freedom is most precious to most people worldwide. That is one reason why so many people have come to our shores and are still coming. To restrict or even eliminate our freedoms is a slap in the face to all freedom-loving people. It is certainly un-American. While there may be some Americans who are rude, offensive and insensitive, there are many who are not, many more who are not. Which in part makes the United States of America, the greatest country in the world. It may not be perfect, but warts and all, it still is the best.
