Toledo driver pleads guilty to causing crash that injured a child

A Toledo woman accused of driving while intoxicated and causing a Wood County traffic crash that injured one of her juvenile passengers has pleaded guilty to vehicular assault.

Lania Treadwell, 26, appeared Thursday in the courtroom of Wood County Common Pleas Judge Joel Kuhlman.

Wood County Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Dexter Phillips said the plea offer included the amended charge of vehicle assault, a fourth-degree felony; OVI and endangering children, both first-degree misdemeanors.

Kuhlman said he could impose a sentence of up to 18 months for the felony charge and 180 days for each misdemeanor.

There will be a mandatory driver’s license suspension of up to five years for the vehicle assault charge and mandatory three days in jail for the OVI, he said.

Phillips said on Sept. 30 at 10 p.m., Treadwell was operating a vehicle northbound on Interstate 75 near the 168 mile marker south of Bowling Green. She had three juveniles in the vehicle.

Law enforcement received several complaints of the truck operating in a reckless manner, Phillips said.

A truck towing a camper was in the left lane and Treadwell attempted to pass on the left berm. She struck the trailer and lost control, then crossed three lanes of traffic before coming to rest.

An 11-year-old in her vehicle suffered a head injury and was in and out of consciousness, Phillips said.

Troopers on the scene observed signs of intoxication and testing showed Treadwell had a blood alcohol content of 0.133, he said.

Sentencing was scheduled for May 25.

Defense attorney Joshua Williams requested the alcohol monitor being worn by his client be removed.

“It’s a sense of embarrassment. She has maintained sobriety,” he said.

Kuhlman denied the request, saying the charges are directly related to Treadwell drinking and driving.
