New Englander, Paul V. Crawford, 86, of Bozeman, Montana passed away on Sunday, December 15th. Born to
John J. and Gladys Mingo Crawford in New Hampshire on January 9, 1933.
His creative and intellectual senses merged with his interest in cartography and geography. Paul received
his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from University of Oklahoma and finished his PhD at the University
of Kansas. He married Suzanne Haines in 1965, who survives him.
Additional surviving family members include son, John (New York City), and Jane (Bozeman, Montana),
Jane’s spouse, Douglas Gion, grandson, Sid, and granddaughter, Wren. While this reflects on Paul’s
nuclear family, his non-biological one is too extensive to list, as he and Sue generated many wonderful
connections.
Paul’s teaching career finally landed him at Bowling Green State University, where he raised his family.
During the summer months, Paul would head to his childhood hangout in Red Beach, Maine. He loved teaching
his kids to camp, fish, and explore the tidal pools in the Passamaquoddy Bay. Paul was an amazingly
patient man who led by example. He was quick witted and widely accepting of others. He was also a
soft-spoken person, yet his strength was implicit.
In 1993, Robbinston, Maine became his retirement playground. With a small house looking out over the
Atlantic, and a wood lot inland, Paul loved observing his environment.
He was celebrated with an Allegash Award as a lifetime supporter of the Natural Resources Council of
Maine. In 2017, Paul and Suzanne moved to Bozeman, Montana to be close to their grandchildren.
A family funeral mass was held on Thursday, December 19 at the Holy Rosary Church. Condolences and
