Man charged in beating death of girlfriend’s toddler

EUCLID, Ohio (AP) — A man has been charged with aggravated murder in the death of his girlfriend’s
toddler daughter, who authorities said suffered a fatal head injury while in his care last month.
Bail was set at $1 million for Devon Mallory, 31, of Euclid. It wasn’t known Tuesday if he has retained
an attorney.
Mallory is accused of killing 18-month-old Sofia Echevarria. The child died July 30, five days after she
was taken to a hospital, and her death was ruled a homicide from blunt force trauma to the head.
Cleveland.com reported that the girl suffered severe brain bleeding. A surgeon needed to remove part of
her skull to relieve the pressure, and doctors told investigators that her injuries did not appear to be
accidental.
Investigators have not yet determined exactly what happened when the child was injured. Mallory is
accused of lying to police, and authorities said his explanation of Sofia’s death is inconsistent with
the medical examiner’s findings.
