Dr. Warren J. Wolfe

Dr. Warren J. Wolfe, professor of French at Bowling Green State University from 1961 to 1992, died at the
Wood County Hospital on September 21, 2019.
He was born on February 20, 1924, in Monessen, Pennsylvania. He served in the United States Army during
World War II in France, and received his BA in French from DePauw University in 1948 and his MA and PhD
from Indiana University in 1953.
Before coming to Bowling Green in 1961, he taught French at Kentucky Wesleyan (Owensboro) and the
University of Idaho. At Bowling Green, he founded a French study abroad program in Tours in 1963. His
specialty was 18th-century French literature, with emphasis on French travelers to the United States in
the 18th and 19th centuries.
Dr. Wolfe was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Christiane Emilia Rozier, whom he met and
married in France in 1946. He is survived by two sons and a grandson.
A celebration of Warren’s life will take place at the Brookdale Residence, 121 Wintergarden Road, Bowling
Green, on November 22 at 10 a.m.
