BG Philharmonia presents Casual Concert on Sunday
The Bowling Green Philharmonia will present a Casual Concert Sunday at 3 p.m. in Kobacker Hall of Moore
Musical Arts Center.
The orchestra will be in casual dress and the audience is invited to "come as you are."
The orchestra, directed by Emily Freeman Brown, will perform: Aaron Copland’s "Fanfare for the
Common Man,"  Antonin Dvorak’s "Carnival Overture," Richard Strauss’ Serenade for 13
Winds; and Benjamin Britten’s Serenade for Tenor, Horn and Strings with soloists Christopher Scholl,
tenor, and Andrew Pelletier, horn.
Student conductors Brady Meyer, Evan Meccarello, Robert Raganoonanan and Santiago Piñeros-Serrano will
each conduct a movement of Charles Bizet’s "L’Arlesienne Suite No. 2."
Tickets in advance are $7 and $3 for students. Day of concert tickets are $10.
BG area band starts rehearsals on Monday
The Bowling Green Area Community Band will start its eighth season Monday with a rehearsal Monday from
7:15 to 8:45 p.m. in the Bowling Green Middle School Band Room.
The band is ready to welcome new and returning members.  
The band rehearses each Monday, and has a half dozen performances scheduled from fall through the
fireworks in Bowling Green next July 3.
The first concert will be the Halloween Spooktacular Oct. 26. Music by Edvard Grieg, John  Williams and a
selection from Carl Orff’s "Carmina Burana" will be on the program.
The band performs a mix of marches, show tunes, popular melodies, contemporary compositions and patriotic
songs.

Owens thespians stage 24-hour theater event
Owens Community College students, faculty and community members will stage a set of newly minted one act
plays in the Center for Fine and Performing Arts’ Studio Theatre Sept. 27 at 7:30 p.m.
The performance will be the culmination of the 24-hour-long "Theatre Express" during which
performers will write, cast, rehearse and perform six different plays.
The 24-hour marathon begins Sept. 26 when each actor and actress wearing a unique costume put together
from their own wardrobe arrives at the Center for Fine and Performing Arts on the campus at 30335 Oregon
Road in Perrysburg Township. Act will also bring an item that reflects their character’s personality.
Each performer’s photo will then be taken for playwright selection purposes.
Beginning that same evening, six local playwrights will writing and staging a play based on a
yet-to-be-determined theme and topic involving the assigned 3-5 actors and actresses.

Movie on Holocaust heroes screened at Toledo library
TOLEDO – The documentary film "To Who Dared: The Sharps’ War" will be screened Monday at 6 p.m.
in the McMaster Center of the Toledo Lucas County Main Branch Library, 325 Michigan St.
The film tells the story of Rev. Waitstill and Martha Sharp who helped Jews escape the Nazi invasion of
Czechoslovakia and France.
In 2006, the Sharps were posthumously named Righteous Among the Nations by Yad Vashem, Israel’s Holocaust
memorial and museum. They are two of only three Americans to be so recognized.
Rev. Sharp later served as interim pastor for First Unitarian Church in Toledo and helped found the
Northwest Ohio chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union.
Speaking during the Tuesday event will be Naomi Twining of Toledo. Her research and documentation was
instrumental in bringing to light the Sharps’ efforts.
The screening of "Two Who Dared," which was produced by the Sharps’ grandson Artemis Joukowsky,
is free.
‘Christmas Carol’ auditions scheduled for Sept. 28
TOLEDO – Auditions for the Toledo Rep’s "A Christmas Carol"  will be held Sept. 28 at 10th
Street stage at 1 p.m.
The lavish production calls for a large cast of actors of all ages.  Those auditioning should prepare 16
bars of a song of their choice and bring sheet music. Participants may also be asked to dance.
Directed by Debra Ross Calabrese, assistant director Scott Heuerman and music director David Jex,
performances will be held at the Valentine Theatre December 5-7.
