Wood County may get Toledo inmates

Misdemeanor offenders from Toledo may be coming to the Wood County jail next year.
Wood County Sheriff Mark Wasylyshyn confirmed this morning that he had “one preliminary meeting” earlier
this month with the city of Toledo’s Chief of Staff, Robert Reinbolt, a city attorney and a
representative of the Toledo Police Department to discuss the move.
Media reports in recent months have indicated the city of Toledo is seeking to withdraw from its contract
with the Corrections Center of Northwest Ohio.
Wasylyshyn said the meeting covered the possibility of Toledo renting bed space at the jail for people
convicted under the Toledo municipal code. Those brought to the jail would be misdemeanor offenders.
He said the Toledo inmates brought to the jail could number around 30, “but that’s still under
discussion.”
If the move were to happen, Wasylyshyn said it would not take place until after the first of the year,
when construction on an expansion at the jail will be complete.
The expansion would accommodate 75 additional beds.
With the expansion, “we built for the future,” he said.
If approved, the move would be a good thing for Wood County, Wasylyshyn said, bringing in “potentially
some good dollars.”
