American music focus of movie series at Owens

"America’s Music: A Film History of Our Popular Music from Blues to Bluegrass to
Broadway" opens Tuesday at 7 p.m. with a program featuring blues and gospel in the Center for Fine and
Performing Arts Mainstage Theatre.A musical performance by The Good The Bad And The Blues will kick off the
event, which will be followed by the feature films "Martin Scorsese Presents The Blues" and
"Say Amen, Somebody". Dr. Matthew Donahue, from the Bowling Green State University Department of
Popular Culture, will lead discussion after the film.The is the first of six free programs. "America’s
Music: A Film History of Our Popular Music from Blues to Bluegrass to Broadway" is designed to
introduce genres of 20th century American popular music that are deeply connected to the history, culture
and geography of the United States. The program features documentary screenings, musical performances and
scholar-led discussions.Other programs, all at 7 p.m., in the series:• "Broadway: The American
Musical" with music by Jodi Jobuck, Lynda Dunn and Jo-Anne Chrysochoos Jan. 29 at Way Public Library in
Perrysburg• Ken Burns’ "Jazz" and "International Sweethearts of Rhythm" with music by
Owens Jazz Ensemble Feb. 12 in Owens’ Mainstage Theatre.• "High Lonesome: The Story of Bluegrass
Music" with music by Hand Hand String Band Feb. 26 in Owens’ Mainstage Theatre.• "The History of
Rock ‘n’ Roll" with music by MAD 45 March 12 in Owens’ Mainstage Theatre.• "Latin Music USA"
and "From Mambo to Hip Hop: A South Bronx Tale" with music by Price of the Ticket Owens’ Mainstage
Theatre.Owens was chosen as one of 50 organizations nationwide to participate in the program.The program is
presented by the American Library Association Public Programs Office and the Tribeca Film Institute, in
consultation with Tribeca Flashpoint and the Society for American Music.
