BG gallery hop Friday showcases local art
A First Friday Gallery Hop will be held in Bowling Green Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. This
event showcases Bowling Green’s art scene, and provides an opportunity for the
public to view exhibits, watch artist demonstrations, listen to live music and
more.
The participating art venues are:
• Akimbo Gallery, 175 N. Main St. Pottery by Mary Dennis and live music by Tim Tegge.
• DADA, 131 W. Wooster Street. Art by local artists working in various media and live
music. Refreshments served.
• Happy Badger, 331 N. Main St. Art by Toledo native, Jason Vahle. Happy Badger will
also feature an "End of the Hop" party with live music and
refreshments.
• Manabigama Pottery Center, 13270 Bishop Road. A large assortment of fine handmade
wood fired pottery, light refreshments and pottery-making demonstrations.
• Studio 14 Tattoos and Body Piercings, 125 N. Main St. Work by resident artists,
Laura Flickenger, John Embry, Digger Pierce, Corey Jones and Joe Peabody. A
variety of styles from hyper-refined oil painting to traditional Americana of
tattooing’s roots.

Drawing class offered by Grand Rapids Arts Council
GRAND RAPIDS – The Grand Rapids Arts Council is sponsoring a drawing class for
students age 7 though seventh grade, running, Aug. 7 through Aug. 10, from 9
from 11:30 a.m. in the old Cousin’s Restaurant.
The instructor will be Peter Koelsch, who has fine arts degrees in digital art and
sculpture. His video and animation can be found on YouTube. He won two awards
for best animated short at Cleveland’s EMIT film festival in 2004 and 2005, as
well as best of show in 2005.
The cost will be $20 per student, with discounted prices for children from the same
family. All supplies will be included in the registration fee. Call Lynne Long

Midnight Rockers play Rhythm on the River show
GRAND RAPIDS – Curtis Jr. and the Midnight Rockers will perform Rhythm on the River
Arts Series show Sunday at 4 p.m.
The programs are held in the Wright Pavilion located on the towpath between the canal
and the Maumee River at the end of Lincoln Street behind LaRoe’s Restaurant.
Curtis Jr. and the Midnight Rockers are on a mission to keep blues alive. In 2006,
the band placed first runner-up in the nationally-recognized Black Swamp Blues
Society "Blues Competition" and have played in some of the premier
clubs in Northwest Ohio including the Fat Fish Blue and Casa Baron in Perrysburg
and Toledo Easy Street. Band members are Curtis Jr. on drums and vocals, Earl
Grant on keyboards, Bobby G. on vocals, Al Hartfield on guitar and vocals, and
Jim Dedegorio on bass.
In case of inclement weather, the program will be moved to the former Cousins
Restaurant in Grand Rapids.
New music double bill set
TOLEDO – The Robinwood Concert House, 2564 Robinwood Ave,, will host a contemporary
music double header Friday starting at 9 p.m.
Performing will be:
• Matador plays on the fringes on the avant-garde and contemporary classical while
also encapsulating the feel and passion of swing music. The international lineup
of Berklee College of Music graduates includes: multi-woodwind instrumentalist
Michael Sachs from Los Angeles, drummer Jun Young Song from Seoul, Korea, and
bassist Aaron Darrell from Virginia.
• Modern jazz guitarist and composer L.A. Jenkins’ wishes "to advance the ideal
of artistic freedom being unhindered by cultural assumptions about the
individual and enforced as limiting expectations as it relates to categories and
genre." His current interest is playing in the genre of modern jazz/free
improvisation, ambient/ experimental, avant-garde, and film compositions.

Zavac back for afternoon show
TOLEDO – Saxophonist Jeff Zavac will perform a Jazz On The Maumee concert at the
Grand Plaza’s Aqua Lounge, 444 N Summit St., Aug. 8 at 5 p.m.
A popular area entertainer Zavac returns from Florida to perform with Jim Gottron.
