Opera staging ‘Turandot’
TOLEDO – The Toledo Opera will present Giacomo Puccini’s last opera,
"Turandot", May 11 at 8 p.m. at the Toledo Museum of Art Peristyle.

A cast of vocal artists, portraying the brave prince, Cal?†f, the apparently
heartless princess, Turandot, and other characters, both royal and not, will be
joined by the Toledo Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Stefan Sanderling and
the Toledo Opera Chorus and Children’s Chorus.
Marc Verzatt, who directed the opera’s 50th anniversary production of
"Candide," returns to Toledo to stage direct this production of
"Turandot."
In the opera, based on a Persian fairy tale set in ancient China, young men are
literally dying to marry a princess. Time and again, Turandot poses three
riddles to her suitors, sentencing them to death if they fail. When Cal?†f sees
the icy beauty, he too falls under her spell and risks his life to win her love.
The score includes the famous tenor aria "Nessun dorma."
Amy Louise Yekel, doctoral student at Arizona State University, plays the title role.
Adam Laurence Herskowitz, from the Metropolitan Opera, appears as Cal?†f.
Bass-baritone Stephen West will play Timur, Cal?†f’s father. Also in the cast
are Jennifer Cresswell and her husband, Brad Cresswell, radio program manager
for Toledo’s WGTE Public Media
Tickets are from $25 to $65. Call (419) 255-7464).
