Star students earn scholarships through Pemberville Free Fair

The 2011 scholarship recipients through the Pemberville Free Fair are Kelsey Appelhans, Allison Marie
Bailey and Megan Boyk.
Kelsey is the daughter of Joe and Katty Appelhans. In September she will attend the University of
Cincinnati, majoring in surgical assisting, minoring in biology and following the pre-med track with
plans to attend medical school.
Throughout high school, Kelsey has been involved in FFA, student council, junior executive council,
senior executive council, and people incorporated. Kelsey earned nine varsity letters while in high
school in cross country, cheerleading and track and field. During her senior year she was captain of all
three sports.
She works at Wood County Hospital and Front Street Cafe.

Allison is the daughter of John and Carol Bailey. A graduate of Eastwood High School, she was a squad
leader of the high school snare line for three years and the section leader of the drum line for two
years.
Allison is a member of the National Honor Society, Tri-M Music Society and the founding president of the
Key Club. She enjoys spending her time doing community service, being a pianist and backup vocalist on
Foundation Stone Christian Church’s worship team, reading and spending time with her friends.
She has taken piano lessons for 12 years and will study at Bowling Green State University in the fall,
pursing a major in piano performance.
Megan is the daughter of Dave and Darla Boyk. She was involved at Eastwood in soccer, music and
philanthropy while maintaining a 4.3 GPA. She was a National Merit Scholars Commended Student.
Megan was a third year letterman in soccer and received an all-state award for maintaining a high GPA
while playing a varsity sport this fall.
Megan was also very involved in music. She was in choir for four years, a member of Encore, an a-capella
group, and of the Tri-M music honor society. Megan is a volunteer aide at a summer school for the
children of migrant workers.
She is also a member of Youth in Philanthropy Encouraging Excellence. YIPEE is a group of high school
juniors and seniors that have raised $35,000 for local charities in the past two years.
Megan will be attending John Carroll University in the fall where she will participate in the Honors and
Leadership Scholars Program. She will be in pre-med, majoring in biology with a concentration in
neuroscience and a minor in foreign affairs.
