Moment of silence returns to Rossford school board mtgs.

ROSSFORD – The Board of Education voted 4-1 Monday to reinstitute a moment a silence before each meeting.

The board followed the practice after Brian Hughes became president several years ago, but it had ceased
without discussion when Ken Sutter became president for the 2011 calendar year.
Board member Diane McKinney brought the issue up again at Monday’s meeting. She said it would be a
fitting way to begin a meeting.
Board member Dawn Burks, however, objected. While such a moment might be appropriate in special
instances, at "each and every board meeting, I don’t feel it’s necessary."
She continued: "This is a business meeting and should be separate from other things."
Burks also said the board should strive for a consistency of structure and not keep going back and forth.

Hughes said he "respected" Burks’ viewpoint, But didn’t see a problem if the moment of silence
was observed before the meeting was officially convened.
