O’Brien finishes fourth
ALBUQUERQUE, N. M. – Eastwood High School graduate James O’Brien finished fourth in the 800 Sunday at the
USA Indoor Track and Field Championships.
O’Brien, who runs professionally for the Indiana Invaders, had a time of 1:49.09. The winning time was
1:48.03.
O’Brien was a national indoor and outdoor qualifier in his event last year and was the Division II state
champion in the 800 as a senior at Eastwood in 2005.
He was a 10-time NCAA Division III All-American at Ohio Northern University in cross country and track,
winning the 800 national championship during the 2007 and 2009 indoor seasons and the 2007 outdoor
season.
BG-Buffalo men set for 1 p.m. tipoff
The final men’s regular-season men’s basketball game in Anderson Arena will have a 1 p.m. tipoff on
Saturday when Bowling Green hosts Buffalo.
Falcon baseball records first win
MURRAY, Ky. – A rain shortened contest allowed Bowling Green’s baseball team to earn its first victory of
the season in a 4-2 decision over the Murray State on Sunday. The game was called after seven complete
innings of play when the rains started in the top of the eighth.
Charles Wooten (1-1) earned his first win of the season pitching five innings and allowing both Murray
State runs. Matt Malewitz earned the save pitching a scoreless seventh.
Patrick Martin led all hitters going 3-for-4 with two RBI to lead the Falcons offensively in the win.
On Saturday, BG dropped both ends of a doubleheader to Murray State, 6-3 in the opener and 4-3 in the
second game.
In the opener, Frank Berry had three hits for the Falcons, Andrew Kuns added two and O’Brien hit a
triple.
In the second game, Murray State scored with two outs in the bottom of the ninth to secure the win.
Clay Duncan had two hits and an RBI for the Falcons and Matt Vannett, from Bowling Green High School, hit
a double.
BGSU softball drops three
WOODSTOCK, Ga. – Bowling Green’s softball team lost its final three games at the Phyllis Rafter Memorial
tournament, finishing 1-4 in its five games in Georgia. The Falcons are 1-9 overall.
On Sunday BG fell to Ball State, 9-6. The Falcons scored all six of their runs in the top of the first
inning, but could not hold on for the win. Rachel Proehl went 2-for-4 with a triple and a run batted in
to lead BG at the plate.
On Saturday, BG lost twice. Mercer blanked Bowling Green, 13-0 as Jenni Holtz pitched a five-inning
one-hitter, walking one and striking out seven.
In Saturday’s second game host Kennesaw State beat the Falcons, 3-1. Paige Berger hit her first home run
and 13th of her career for BG’s only run. Andrea Arney went 2-for-3 for the Falcons.
BG eighth at MAC indoors
Bowling Green’s women’s track and field team finished eighth at the Mid-American Conference indoor
championships. The meet was held at BG’s Perry Field House.
Eastern Michigan won the 12-team meet with 118 points. BG finished with 45.
BG’s Jeanette Pettigrew finished second in the 60, breaking her own school record with a 7.40 finish.
Ashley Abraham of Eastern Michigan, set a MAC record with a time of 7.34 seconds in winning the event.

BG swimmers tie for sixth
ATHENS – Bowling Green’s swim team finished in a tie for sixth at the Mid-American Conference
championships.
Ohio won the eight-team meet with 6691â„2 points. BG and Akron finished with 3121â„2 points.
On Saturday, BG’s Alexis Kain set a school record with a 2:12.76 finish in the 200 breast stroke. She was
fourth.
Also BG’s Vicky Yu was fourth in the 200 butterfly in 2:00.42.
The Falcons set four school records during the meet, Kain in both the 100 and 200 breast strokes; the 200
freestyle relay team of Brittany Szekely, Carrie Enright, Emily Bennet and Sarah Reinink in the 200
freestyle relay; and Alexa Harris, Kain, Sarah Burston and Bennett in the 400 medley relay.
BG swimmers also met five NCAA B standards -Kain in the 100 and 200 breast stroke; Amanda Rom in the 200
breast stroke; Yu in the 200 butterfly and the 200 freestyle relay team.
Swimmers who meet the A standards receive automatic berths to the NCAA meet. The NCAA then takes a
certain number of B qualifiers, based on the event in question. Those swimmers will be selected in the
near future.
Falcon gymnasts take fourth
LINCOLN, Neb. – Bowling Green’s gymnastics team was fourth with a team score of 189.450 at the Master’s
Classic.
The Falcons posted a season-best score of 48.500 on the floor exercise. Dawn Christman scored a 9.825,
followed by Megan Valentini (9.775), Monica Eaton (9.675), Megn Harrington (9.675) and Kasey Fillmore
(9.550).
BG tennis wins
ST. CLAIR SHORES, Mich. – The Bowling Green State University tennis team picked up wins at all three
doubles flights and in each of the top-five singles matches en route to a 6-1 win at the University of
Detroit Mercy Sunday.
BG is now 8-3 having won four if its last five matches.
