MSU completes sweep of BGSU hockey (2-26-11)

EAST LANSING, Mich. — Goals by Dean Chelios and Derek Grant gave Michigan State a 2-0 win Saturday over
Bowling Green on the final night of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association’s regular season.
Chelios scored at 4:15 of the first period and Grant added an insurance goal at 6:31 of the third period
for the Spartans, who out-shot BG by a 32-17 margin.
BG’s Andrew Hammond stopped 30 shots, while MSU’s Drew Palmisano had 17 saves.
Each team was 0-of-3 on the power play.
The win gave MSU a series sweep after a 2-1 win Friday.
“We played somewhat better than we did last night, but only at times,” BG coach Chris Bergeron said.
“There weren’t enough plays being made. We didn’t made plays when we had opportunities to.
“It was an inconsistent effort in the offensive zone. There were shifts we did all right and there were
other shifts we lost too many pucks and got beat to too many pucks. Ultimately, it wasn’t a very good
weekend for us.”
The Falcons finished last in the 11-team CCHA with records of 8-24-4 overall and 3-21-4-2 in the league.
BG visits sixth-place Northern Michigan (14-17-5, 12-13-3-0) next weekend in the first round of the
league playoffs.
MSU finished 10th at 15-17-4, 11-15-2-0.
BG played Saturday without forward David Solway and defenseman Ian Ruel.
Bergeron said Solway, one of BG’s best players, has been suffering from headaches and will be evaluated
further after the team returned to BG. Ruel remains out with a concussion.
