PERRYSBURG — Maumee put quite a damper on Perrysburg’s Senior Night.
The Panthers made it a struggle for Perrysburg’s boys on offense Friday, and the result was a convincing
57-45 road victory over their cross-river rivals.
Perrysburg shot an anemic 32 percent (16-of-49) from the field and scored just eight points over the
middle two quarters in ending its regular season on a down note.
The ’Jackets dropped to 13-7 overall and 10-4 in the Northern Lakes League, still finishing second in the
NLL standings.
“Maumee made all the big plays when they had to make them,” Perrysburg coach Dave Boyce said. “They had a
good gameplan going in. It certainly was working … Whatever we tried didn’t work.” PHOTO GALLERY

Maumee (12-8, 8-6) used an extended 2-3 zone that made it difficult for Perrysburg to find open shots.
The ’Jackets, usually a solid outside shooting team, finished just 4-of-21 (19 percent) from 3-point
range.
The Panthers, who used their starting five on the floor almost all of the game, were led by Tyler
Martin’s game-high 21 points, 14 of which came in the second half.
Shawn Flanagan had 16 points for Maumee, and Anthony Barnum added six points, seven rebounds and two
blocks. The Panthers finished 19-of-30 (63 percent) from the floor.
“Our staff came up with a great plan. We just executed pretty well tonight,” Maumee coach Derek Sheridan
said. “I was real happy for our kids. I know the Maumee community is probably pretty happy about this as
well.
“Dave (Boyce) just does such a great job with Perrysburg,” Sheridan added. “Any time you can be
successful against a well-oiled machine like what they have, it’s gratifying.”
Perrysburg led 13-12 through the first quarter as a large home crowd was enthusiastic after the Senior
Night festivities and the school honoring former long-time coach Larry Clark just before tipoff.
But in the second quarter the game became a slugfest, with Maumee out-scoring the ’Jackets 8-5 and taking
a slim 20-18 lead into halftime.
As Perrysburg continued to struggle to start the second half, making just 1-of-8 field goals in the third
quarter, Maumee began to open up on offense, led by Martin and Flanagan, and took a 32-21 lead into the
fourth.
“We didn’t make outside shots. We didn’t make inside shots, and we didn’t get to the foul line,” Boyce
said. “The first quarter was anybody’s game. Most of the second quarter was anybody’s game. But, the
game started to go their way and started to go at the pace they wanted it to go, and they fed off that.”

Perrysburg finally found its offensive rhythm in the fourth quarter scoring 24 points, but allowed Maumee
to score 25 as the Panthers went 14-of-22 from the foul line in the final 4:58 of the game.
“I don’t know if it was so much what we did, (Perrysburg) just didn’t shoot the ball the way they
normally shoot it,” Sheridan said. “We did a good job of closing out on their shooters. Our kids did a
really good job of guarding the 3-point line, which is hard to do in an even-front zone.”
Senior Alec Schmenk led Perrysburg with 13 points, while fellow seniors Devon Dunbar and Kevin Schenk,
and junior Jake Pfleghaar each finished with eight points.
It was also the final home game for Perrysburg seniors Karter Sell, Matt Schimmoeller and Stephen Yant.

Next for the ’Jackets is the Division I sectional tournament. Perrysburg drew a tough assignment in a
talented Lima Senior (12-5) team to open the tournament Tuesday at Liberty-Benton High School.
“We’ve got to get ready for Lima,” Boyce said. “They’re a good team. They’re quick and big and have some
shooters and play defense hard, so we’ve got our work cut out for us. We’ve certainly got to get (to
practice) and get to work.”
Perrysburg won the junior varsity game, 45-35. Dan Johnston led the ’Jackets with 13 points and Shane
Edwards scored 10.
