College Scene: MSU’s Powers selected to play in World University Golf Championship (02-25-11)

Caroline Powers, a sophomore at Michigan State University and a graduate of Bowling Green High School,
has been selected to represent the United States at the World University Golf Championship held in
Shenzhen, China in August.
Last year’s golf competition featured golfers from Italy, Spain, France, Ireland, Great Britain, Canada,
Germany, Russia and Taiwan, as well as the United States.
The event features individual competition and team competition. Each country can take five female
players: three play as the team, counting the best two scores each day over a total of 72 holes for the
tournament, while the other two play for medalist honors as individuals.
Powers was one of five collegiate golfers chosen from the United States.
Powers finished in the top 10 in three of MSU’s four fall tournaments, including a third-place showing at
the Mary Fossum Invitational.
She leads the team this season with a 72.5 scoring average and enters the spring ranked 29th in the
nation according to the Golfweek/Sagarin ratings. In her first year, Powers established an MSU freshman
record with her 76.0 average.
Steve Culbertson, from Bowling Green High School, and Matt White, from Perrysburg High School, are
members of the Bowling Green State University club hockey team.
Head coach Chad Buchanan and assistant coach Brett Heringhaus, both Bowling Green High School graduates,
helped lead the team to the American Club Hockey Association Division II regionals this weekend.
In 17 games, Culbertson has 10 goals and nine assists.
In 28 games, White is tied for the team lead in goals with 28 and is second with 42 points.
Casey Adamick, from Perrysburg High School, is a sophomore on the Ohio Northern University track team.

Adamick took third place in the 3,000 at the Rick Meindl Invitational, finishing in a time of 11:26.4.

Mitchell Auchmuty, from Elmwood High School, is a sophomore on the Capital University men’s track and
field team.
Auchmuty broke his own school record in the weight throw at the Greater Columbus Invitational, and also
took eighth in the shot put. He was 14th in the weight throw at the All-Ohio Championships.
Jordan Breitigam, from Bowling Green High School, is a freshman on the Ohio Northern men’s swimming and a
diving team.
Breitigam was part of the Polar Bears’ seventh consecutive Ohio Athletic Conference title this season.

Rachael Clay, from Rossford High School, is a junior on the Miami University track and field team.
Clay was part of Miami’s first-place 1,600 relay team at the Hoosier Hills Invitational.
Eric Cubberly, from Eastwood High School, is a junior on the Central Michigan wrestling team.
Cubberly was part of the Chippewas’ 12th Mid-American Conference title in the last 13 seasons after CMU
defeated Kent State on Feb. 20.
He’s 20-12 at 157 pounds.
Ryan Cubberly, from Eastwood High School, is a senior on the Central Michigan wrestling team.
He was part of the Chippewas’ 12th Mid-American Conference title in the last 13 seasons after CMU
defeated Kent State on Feb. 20.
He’s 6-10 at 149 pounds.
Ashton Dennen, from Otsego High School, is a junior long sprints/distance runner on the Ohio Northern
women’s track team.
Dennen was fifth in the 3,000 at the Rick Meindl Invitational, finishing in a time of 11:44.4.
Taylor Dimmerling, from Perrysburg High School, is a sophomore on the Eastern Michigan University
baseball team.
In two appearances this season, Dimmerling has allowed two earned runs in 1 2/3 innings pitched. The
Eagles are 1-3.
Marisa Everitt, from Rossford High School, is a senior pitcher/outfield on the Oakland University
softball team.
In six games this season Everitt is batting .278 with three runs batted in.
Pitching, Everitt is 1-1 with a 1.26 earned-run average in 14 1/3 innings pitched.
The Golden Grizzlies are 2-4.
Jason Faykosh, from Eastwood High School, is a sophomore on the Ohio Northern basketball team.
In 11 games, Faykosh is averaging 1.5 points per game. The Polar Bears are 13-13 overall.
Jordan Fortney, from Bowling Green High School, is a senior on the West Liberty (W. Va.) men’s basketball
team.
The Hilltoppers, ranked No. 1 in NCAA Division II, are 25-0 overall.
Fortney is second on the team in scoring at 16.6 points per game.
Ben Hammer, from Elmwood High School, is a junior outfielder on the University of Toledo baseball team.

In three games, all starts, Hammer is 1-for-9 at the plate with one RBI and one run scored. The Rockets
are 0-3.
Adam Tyson, from Elmwood High School, is a freshman pitcher on the University of Toledo baseball team.

In two appearances this season, Tyson has a 5.40 earned-run average with four strikeouts in 3 1/3 innings
pitched.
Liz Hammer, from Bowling Green High School, is a sophomore on the Ursuline College women’s basketball
team.
In seven games, Hammer is averaging 1.1 points per game. Ursuline is 7-23 overall.
Alex Hernandez, from Eastwood High School, is a junior thrower on the Carnegie Mellon University men’s
track and field team.
David Hieber, from Perrysburg High School, is a sophomore on the Wittenberg men’s basketball team.
In six games, including two starts, Hieber is averaging 3.5 points and 1.5 rebounds per game. Hieber is
currently listed as injured on Wittenberg’s roster.
Wittenberg is 18-7 overall.
Charlie Hughes, from Perrysburg High School, is a freshman on the University of Chicago men’s basketball
team.
In 22 games, Hughes is averaging 2.1 points per game. Chicago is 9-15 overall.
Conner Kilpatrick, from Bowling Green High School, is a junior on the Marietta College men’s basketball
team.
In 26 games, Kilpatrick is averaging 5.0 points and 4.5 rebounds per game. Marietta is 23-3 overall.
Tommy Kralovic, from Rossford High School, is a sophomore on the Owens Community College men’s basketball
team.
Zack Leahy, from Rossford High School, is a freshman on the University of Toledo men’s basketball team.

In 26 games, including nine starts, Leahy is averaging 4.8 points and 1.2 rebounds per game. The Rockets
are 4-24 overall.
Chris Lemon, a Bowling Green resident, is a senior on the University of Dayton track team.
Lemon was sixth in the 5,000 at the Akron Invitational with a time of 14:41.8.
Elizabeth Lemon, a Bowling Green resident, is a freshman distance runner on the University of Toledo
cross country team.
Matt Lemon, a Bowling Green resident, is a senior on the University of Dayton cross country team.
Julia Metzger, from Perrysburg High School, is a sophomore on the University of Oregon women’s tennis
team.
Metzger has an overall record of 6-9 for the Ducks in 2010-11.
Brooke Morgart, from Elmwood High School, is a junior infielder on the Ohio University softball team.
In seven games, all starts, Morgart is 3-for-17 at the plate with two RBI.
Jordan Nichols, from Rossford High School, is a junior on the Marietta men’s basketball team.
Lorin Pierson, from Bowling Green High School, is a sophomore on the University of Maryland men’s swim
team.
Pierson was second for the Terrapins in the 100 individual medley against Georgetown, finishing in a time
of 54.67.
Katie Reiser, from Elmwood High School, is a freshman sprinter on Kent State University track and field
team.
Reiser set a personal best in the 60, finishing in a time of 7.69 seconds at the Akron Invitational and
taking sixth place.
It was the sixth-fastest time in school history. She also posted a personal-best in 200 with a time of
25.29 to take third.
Cody Seifert, from Eastwood High School, is a freshman sprinter on the Kent State University track and
field team.
Seifert was 16th in the 60 at the Akron Invitational, finishing in a time of 7.02.
Alyssa Shimel, from Eastwood High School, is a freshman on the University of Michigan women’s golf team.

Shimel is fourth on the tem with an 18-hole average of 78.14. She tied for 40th at the Lady Puerto Rico
Classic, held in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico, finishing with a 54-hole score of 232.
Jake Smith, from Perrysburg High School, is a sophomore with the Ashland University men’s basketball
team.
Curtis Smithey, from Elmwood High School, is a junior on the University of Findlay men’s track and field
team.
Smithey was seventh in the 400 at the Kent State University Tune-Up, finishing in a time of 48.72, a
provisional time.
Jacob Southwick, from Otsego High School, is a junior on the Ashland University wrestling team.
Southwick is ranked fifth in the NCAA Division II wrestling coaches poll in the 285-pound weight class.

Tyler Swartz, from Perrysburg High School, is a sophomore distance runner on the University of Findlay
men’s track and field team.
Brittany TenEyck, from Lake High School, is a senior diver for the University of Cincinnati.
TenEyck had the Bearcats’ best finish at the Big East Championships, taking fifth in the 1-meter with a
six-dive total of 274.65.
Christy Titus, from Bowling Green High School, is a senior distance runner on the Boston College women’s
indoor track and field team.
Kelly Titus, from Bowling Green High School, is a freshman swimmer at the University of Kentucky.
Matt Vannett, from Bowling Green High School, is a junior catcher/infielder on the Bowling Green State
University baseball team.
In two games this season, Vannett is 0-for-2 at the plate and has recorded four putouts.
Cami Wasserman, is a sophomore pole vaulter on the Kent State women’s track and field team.
Justin Welch, from Eastwood High School, is a freshman on the University of Georgia men’s track and field
team.
He finished fifth in the weight throw at the Virginia Tech Invitational with a throw of 64-5 and was
fifth again in the Razorback Invitational hosted by Arkansas (65-2). The Arkansas throw was the
second-best of his career.
