Perrysburg boys take care of Anthony Wayne (2-18-11)

WHITEHOUSE — Zone defenses often have strong points and weaknesses.
Perrysburg’s boys found the right spots to attack Anthony Wayne’s 2-3 zone Friday night, and the result
was a convincing 62-40 road victory.
The Yellow Jackets made 9-of-14 3-pointers (64 percent) in the game, while playing some stingy defense of
their own to improve to 12-6 overall and 10-3 in the Northern Lakes League.
Perrysburg’s Kevin Schenk led all players with 16 points, Matt Schimmoeller had 15 points and nine
assists, and Karter Sell added 11 points and three steals for the ’Jackets.
“We did some of the things we had to do well,” Perrysburg coach Dave Boyce said. “Our offense was a
little skittish all night, but we ended up getting 62 points and somehow we got it done.
“We shot the ball well early and that made them come out and play us … Then some things opened up
inside.”
The ’Jackets scored the game’s first seven points and led 12-2 with 2:50 left in the first quarter, with
Schenk and Sell both hitting triples. Perrysburg led 12-5 after the first quarter as the Generals shot
2-of-8 from the floor.
Perrysburg continued to build its lead in the second quarter, making 5-of-6 three’s in the quarter and
taking a 31-18 lead into halftime.
“Any good team, the key is that you can play against any kind of defense, and you can take what they’re
giving you,” Boyce said. “We’re capable of that. Sometimes we’re not always that confident, and we’re
better than what we give ourselves credit for sometimes.”
Perrysburg’s lead never dipped below 13 points in the second half, as AW switched to a man-to-man defense
early in the third quarter.
The ’Jackets then started going inside, with Schimmoeller scoring 10 points in the second half.
Perrysburg attempted just three 3-pointers in the second half, but made two.
“We used our stall play to kind of pull them out, and as soon as they came out we went inside,” Schenk
said. “What you want to do is go inside and attack the zone. You can’t sit out and be passive with it.

“That’s one of our strong suits. We have five or six guys who can all shoot the three. We want to take
advantage of that if we have the open shot.”
Also for Perrysburg, Devon Dunbar scored seven points and Tyler Gordon finished with a team-high five
rebounds off the bench.
AW 6-foot-8 sophomore Mark Donnal finished with an impressive line of 14 points, 12 rebounds, and five
steals. Six of Donnal’s rebounds were offensive.
“Donnal is incredibly tough,” Boyce said. “He’s only going to get better. He’s only going to get stronger
and he’s a very smart player already … He’s going to present some huge challenges in the coming
years.”
Donnal, Reed Allen (13 points) and Jake Conklin (nine points) accounted for all but four of the Generals’
points in the game.
AW, which committed 22 turnovers in the game, is 5-12 overall and 3-10 in the NLL.
Next for the ’Jackets is a non-league home game against Toledo Waite on Tuesday, which is a replacement
for the Cleveland St. Ignatius game that was postponed earlier this season.
The ’Jackets then finish the regular season with a home NLL contest against rival Maumee next Friday
before facing Lima Senior to open the sectional tournament at Liberty-Benton on March 1.
“We’re trying to string together a couple of wins here before the tournament. We have Waite on Tuesday,
so hopefully we can keep it going,” Schenk said. “Waite’s going to pressure us a lot, and we have Lima
Senior in the tournament. So hopefully that will give us a good look as to what Lima Senior will be
like.”
Perrysburg won the junior varsity game, 50-48. Bryant Byrd led Perrysburg with 18 points and Shane
Edwards scored 13.
