Man sets fire to house while trying to thaw steps

Minor damage was reported after a man accidentally set his house on fire using a propane torch Monday
morning in a residence in rural Bowling Green, west of the city.
The fire was reported at about 10 a.m. at 16560 Tontogany Road. According to Washington Township
Assistant Fire Chief Todd Buehrer, the department initially received a report of a structure fire with
flames showing. Three units responded.
Buehrer said that the homeowner had been attempting to thaw ground out around a set of concrete steps at
the front of the house with a propane torch when the siding of the house caught fire. However, the
flames were extinguished before fire crews arrived.
There was no one else at the residence at the time, and the house was still habitable. Buehrer said that
minor damage occurred to the two-story house, amounting to $1,000.
Crews remained on scene for 30 minutes.
