Falcon hockey edged by No. 10 Notre Dame (2-11-11)

NOTRE DAME, Ind. — Anders Lee scored with 3:14 remaining Friday to give 10th-ranked Notre Dame a 2-1 win
over Bowling Green in a Central Collegiate Hockey Association game.
The goal enabled ND to overcome the excellent goaltending of BG’s Andrew Hammond, who made 36 saves.
The sophomore stopped 14 shots in the first period, 10 in the second period and 12 in the third period on
a night the Falcons were out-shot by a 38-22 margin.
BG fell to 8-20-3 overall and 3-17-3-1 in the CCHA.
ND is 17-9-5, 14-6-3-2. The Fighting Irish took over first place in the CCHA with 47 points, one point
ahead of Miami and Michigan.
Miami was a 4-3 shootout loser against Western Michigan, while Michigan was a 3-2 winner over Ohio State.

Thirteen of BG’s last 15 games have been decided by two or fewer goals, and the Falcons are 2-8-3 in that
span.
“For the most part, we played a good road game,” BG coach Chris Bergeron said. “Our effort was good and
our execution was pretty good.
“We didn’t take advantage of a couple of chances we had around their net and they got the goal in the
third period.”
ND opened the scoring on Bryan Rust’s goal with 7:21 left in the first period. BG tied the game on Mike
Fink’s power-play goal with 12 minutes to play in the second period.
The goal was Fink’s third of the season. His only other goals came Oct. 22-23 when he scored once in each
game against Alabama-Huntsville.
Hammond played well again as he started for the fourth straight game.
In his last five games, he’s stopped 135-of-143 shots for a 1.74 goals-against average and a .944 save
percentage.
For the season, Hammond has a 2.70 goals-against and a .912 save percentage.
BG won the special teams, going 1-for-4 on the power play and holding ND scoreless on all three of its
attempts.
“We executed a nice goal on the power play and we moved the puck around pretty well on the power play,”
Bergeron said. “Our penalty-killing did a decent job.”
ND’s Mike Johnson made 21 saves.
BG remained without defenseman Jake Sloat, who missed his fifth straight game with a quad contusion.
The series concludes Saturday night at 7:05.
