BGHS hosts 1,161 students at OMEA contest Saturday

For the first time in more than three decades, the music staff of Bowling Green High School is hosting an
Ohio Music Education Association District One (east) Solo & Ensemble Adjudicated Event.
BGHS will house 1,161 distinct performance events, approximately 125 per hour, throughout the day on
Saturday. Vocalists, woodwind, brass, percussion and string instrumentalists from 36 high schools in
Lucas and Wood counties comprise the young artist pool, representing grades 9-12.
The students will perform for one of the 24 guest adjudicators, who are drawn from secondary and college
or university faculties from around the state. Students perform selections from a state-required list of
repertoire, plus scales or snare drum rudiments as part of the adjudications process. Judges write
critiques of each performance, then assign a rating evaluation, based upon a 5 point scale.
With 109 registered events, the Bowling Green students will comprise of the largest contingents of
performers of the entire contest. In addition to performing, they will be serving in several student
volunteer positions, including the jobs of judge’s assistants, room chairmen and office runners.
Assisting the music staff this week will be more than 60 band and orchestra parents, volunteering with
office work, logistics and concessions.
Karen Smith, director of bands, is the event chair; music teachers Adam Landry, Shawn Hudson, Joel
Hamilton and Bruce Corrigan are the event committee members.
All performances are free and open to the public. Guests are reminded that photography, video recording
and audio recording during performances are forbidden by the OMEA rules.
