For a player known for her electrifying 3-pointers, slashing drives to the basket and uncanny accuracy
from the free-throw line, it was a simple layup that proved to be a record-breaking shot. PHOTO GALLERY
Lauren Prochaska’s
layup with 16:39 left to play in Saturday’s game against Ball State in Anderson Arena was the 2,123rd
point of her Bowling Green career, moving her past Jackie Motycka Mossing to the top of the Falcons’
career scoring list. Motycka Mossing (1985-89) scored 2,122 points in 117 games and is one of the most
dominant players in Mid-American Conference history. Motycka married Matt Mossing and now lives in the
Evergreen school district.
Prochaska finished with 21 points in BG’s 61-46 victory over Ball State and has now scored 2,127 points
in 125 career games.
“It’s definitely an honor. It was really great to have Jackie here today and have her support,” Prochaska
said.
“I don’t think you ever imagine yourself doing something like that when you come to campus as a
freshman,” she added. “You feel so helpless compared to all the upperclassmen. I don’t think it’s
something that you ever imagine yourself doing right away.”
Prochaska said the record-setting basket came on a broken play that was called for Chrissy Steffen.
“I didn’t even hear it (the play call). (Assistant coach) Keven Eckert was making fun of me that I broke
the record on a messed up play for Chrissy,” Prochaska said. “That was the joke today when I broke the
record.”
Prochaska, 5-feet-11, had posted up Ball State’s Brandy Woody, 5-4, on the low block on the right side of
the lane. Prochaska got the entry pass from teammate Maggie Hennegan, turned and laid the ball in.
Motycka Mossing was in attendance at Saturday’s game. She and Prochaska were both members of the
13-player All-Anderson Arena women’s team. It was also Alumni Day for BG’s women’s basketball.
“It’s a great day for Lauren, very exciting. It couldn’t happen to a nicer girl,” Motycka Mossing said
after the game. “She worked hard and she deserved it.
“It was a long record and it deserved to be broken,” Motycka Mossing continued. “It was nice to be here
to see her do it. She’s a phenomenal shooter.
“It’s a good day. You couldn’t ask for a better day,” Motycka Mossing added.
Prochaska said she became aware of Motycka Mossing when she started her Bowling Green career, but never
really had the opportunity to talk to her until Saturday.
“It was really nice to actually get to talk to her today. She was great,” Prochaska said.
BG head coach Curt Miller was pleased that Prochaska was able to set the record in front of a great
crowd, which included nine members of the 13-player All-Anderson team and past basketball alumni.
“To have Jackie Motycka Mossing in the building to present her with the game ball at the end, it makes it
extra special,” BG head coach Curt Miller said.
“It shows Lauren’s consistency through the years that she is a high efficiency player,” Miller continued.
“She is a player who has become the all-time leading scorer by not getting the amount of shots per game
that some star players do.”
