WWII vet talks about sinking of Coast Guard ship
PERRYSBURG – A man who survived the 1944 sinking of a U.S. Coast Guard cutter will speak tonight at 7:30
at the Schaller Memorial Building, 130 W. Indiana Ave.
This kicks off the winter speaker’s series sponsored by American Legion Post No. 28.
Dr. Bernard Sternsher, who served in the Coast Guard from 1943 to 1946, survived the sinking of the
cutter Jackson off Cape Haterras, N.C., due to a hurricane on Sept. 14, 1944. Sternsher and his
shipmates were adrift for 58 hours on life rafts before rescue, and were repeatedly beleaguered by
sharks.
After his rescue and recovery, Sternsher transferred to a ship stationed in the Philippines.
County Dems host watch party
The Wood County Democrats will be hosting a State of the Union watch party at the Clazel Theater, 127 N.
Main in Bowling Green, on Tuesday. Doors open at 8 p.m. with the program starting at 9 p.m.
The event is open to the public.
BG Civil Service to meet Wed.
The Bowling Green Civil Service Commission will meet at 9 a.m. Wednesday in the personnel director’s
office, third floor of the City Administrative Services Building, 304 N. Church St.
The commission will schedule the promotional examination for police chief and take action on
modifications to job descriptions.
