Dean Moosman Memorial Tournament scheduled for Jan. 30

This year’s Dean Moosman Memorial Team tournament presented by the Northwest Ohio Bowling Proprietors
Association is scheduled for Jan. 30 with one squad at 10 a.m.
The event will be held at Al-Mar Lanes and features some of the top bowlers from Northwest Ohio.
This prestigious event honors the late Moosman, who was the proprietor of Varsity Lanes for many years
until his retirement. He was an inductee into at least three bowling halls of fame – Ohio, Bowling Green
and Toledo.
Two of Moosman’s passions were scratch team bowling and youth bowling. This tournament combines those two
as $800 will be awarded in scholarships. The proprietor from the championship team will choose the
recipient of a $400 scholarship; while the second and third place teams will choose the recipients of
$250 and $150 scholarships, respectively.
The championship team will share in a $1,000 guaranteed prize. Entry fee is $250 per team.
The tournament will be bowled on a 40-foot oil pattern condition similar to the 2010 United States
Bowling Congress event.
Limited openings may be available for bowlers. Contact the host Al-Mar at (419) 352-4637.
USBC awards: Kevin Taber, bowling in the Monday Night Trio at Varsity last week recorded a 290 game,
finishing with 11 strikes for the USBC 11-in-a-row award. On Wednesday in the American League at Al-Mar
Lanes, Jim Lowry also finished with 11 strikes for a 290. Though technically earning the award, he will
not receive a second award as he earned his maximum of one award per season earlier for his 297 game
last year.
League ‘lites: It’s as if he wasn’t there. When a bowler is absent most leagues take that bowler’s
average less 10 pins as a blind score for the session. Mike Whitacre, bowling in the Speck Sales 750
House league at Varsity recently entered the league session with a 178 average. He proceeded to roll a
168 triplicate score.
Tourney results: Brian Anderson won a mini-sweeper at Varsity Lanes with a 4-game total of 935, including
games of 244, 254 and 255. He earned $120.
Kevin Onweller was second at 911; while Ryan Taber earned the final check for his 279 game and 888 total,
good for third place.
Team tourney: At 7 p.m. this Friday at Varsity Lanes, adults can experience a team tournament set up
similar to many collegiate or high school tournaments. The five-person teams will bowl two regulation
games, followed by five Baker games. At that point the field will be cut to the top four teams for
bracket-style best of three Baker matches. It is a handicap event. Entry fee is $25 per bowler. Details
by calling Varsity at (419) 352-5247.
Youth of the Week:
Youth bowlers who bowled the most pins over their average last week, with pins over, were as follows.
Varsity: Bantam/Prep, Jordan Cook, 47; Destiny Garner, 29; Major/Junior, Chase Stephens, 46; Elise Semko,
