Falcons women beat Oakland, 81-66

ROCHESTER, Mich. — Bowling Green made its first seven field goal attempts to start the second half as the
Falcons rolled past Oakland, 81-66 Tuesday night. The quick start helped break open a game that the
Falcons led 35-30 at the half.
The victory broke a two-game BG losing streak, non 2-2 overall. Oakland falls to 1-4 overall.
“It’s a huge win for us,” said BG associate head coach Jennifer Roos. “This is a team that went to
post-season play last year and won 26 games.
“This is a good win against a good Oakland team on the road.”
Tracy Pontius scored seven of her game-high 23 points in BG’s 18-4 run to start the second half. The
Falcons got the ball inside and scored in transition in the second half. Bowling Green finished the game
with 36 points in the paint.
After the quick start to the second 20 minutes, the Falcons maintained their edge, shooting the ball well
while scoring 44 points in the second half.
In the first half, BG broke a 10-10 tie with a 13-2 run to take a 23-12 lead with 10:26 to play in the
half. Oakland then went on a 13-5 run to help pull the Grizzlies within five at the break.
For the game, Pontius was 9-of-13 from the field, including 5-of-7 on 3-pointers, on her way to a
season-high in points. She added nine assists.
“I didn’t know if she was going to play today. She’s sicker than a dog,” Roos said. “It was total gut
check for her.”
Also for BG, Lauren Prochaska scored 17 points, Tara Breske added 12 and Tamika Nurse finished with 11
points.
“We had a lot better balance between our inside and outside game,” Roos said. “Tara Breske is really
playing well inside for us.
“We’re just going to try to keep it simple as they say and take it to whoever has the hot hand.”
The Falcons finished the game shooting 50 percent from the field, making 30-of-60 shots. BG was 8-of-22
on 3-pointers (36.4 percent) and 13-of-17 from the free-throw line (76.5 percent).
