BG hockey strives for improved effort

Bowling Green’s hockey team displayed little effort during Friday’s exhibition against the U.S. Under-18
Team.
The Falcons will attempt to rebound from their disappointing performance this weekend.
BG hosts Providence in a non-league series Friday and Saturday nights at 7:05 in the Ice Arena.
The Falcons were 7-2 losers in the non-counting exhibition after opening the season with 3-2, 4-1 losses
the previous weekend at Minnesota State-Mankato.
Providence is 2-1 after splitting at ninth-ranked Notre Dame last weekend.
"I just want to see guys get back to that desperation of battling to be in the lineup," BG
coach Dennis Williams said. "Nothing comes easy, nothing comes free and we’ve got to be a smarter
team, a more harder-working team than what we brought Friday. Those are things we can control."
Williams said there are no guarantees BG will use the full lineup of 18 skaters (usually 12 forwards and
six defensemen) and three goalies.
"I want to see who wants to play Friday. That’s to be determined," Williams said of the lineup.
"The guys who want to buy in and work will be the ones playing."
OFFENSE: Generating more offense remains one of BG’s focal points. The Falcons had just three goals and
43 shots against MSM, and only the two goals and 29 shots in the U.S. exhibition.
"We’re giving up more (shot) opportunities than what we should be," Williams said. "Our
emphasis is shots from everywhere, get the puck to the net and crash the net, get rebounds."
Monday’s practice consisted of shooting, passing and stickhandling drills.
Williams watched the practice from the Ice Arena pressbox. He gave each player several things to work on
offensively after the practice.
"We need to break a bubble and … When you’re in a bit of a (scoring) drought, guys tend to tighten
the grip on their sticks," Williams said. "We’re just working at getting back that confidence
of shooting the puck. The players did a nice job today."
MAYBE: No decision has been made on if Falcon forward David Solway will play this weekend. He practiced
Monday after missing the MSM series and not playing in the U.S. exhibition because of a shoulder injury
suffered Oct. 3.
Solway is BG’s best offensive player. He had 12 goals and 12 assists last season.
"It’s huge," Williams said. "Missing Dave is a critical point for us, but it has given
different guys the chance to step up into different roles."
WAITING: BG still is waiting for the NCAA to rule on the eligibility of freshman defenseman Robert Shea.

The 5-foot-11, 195-pounder was expected to be one of BG’s top four blueliners.
Williams said BG has provided the NCAA will all of the information it requested and is waiting for a
decision.
PENALTIES: The Falcons are fifth in the league in fewest penalty minutes with an average of 16 per game.
BG’s goal is 12 minutes per game.
FINAL TUNEUP: The Providence series is BG’s final tuneup before starting Central Collegiate Hockey
Association play next week.
BG’s first two series are on the road, against Nebraska-Omaha (3-0-1) and Ferris State (3-1).
SERIES: The Falcons are 5-4 against Providence all-time, but lost a 4-3 decision at Providence last
season.
THE END: The series completes a multi-year contract between BG, Providence and Boston College.
