11th Frame: Pros show their talent in BG

0

Over the years, some of the greatest bowlers in the world have shown their talent on Bowling Green lanes.

The tradition continued last weekend as the Professional Bowlers Association held a regional tournament
at Varsity Lanes. Dedicated fans are no doubt familiar with many of the finalists in the tournament.
While the casual fan may not have recognized most of the bowlers due to the lack of "star’ players,
there is little doubt that many of the pros who competed at Varsity Lanes will be stars of the future.

Of the 16 match-play finalists, six are current exempt players on the national PBA circuit, including the
champion Todd Book. Veteran Eugene McCune was joined by younger touring players including Chris
Loschetter, Brian Waliczek, Ronnie Russel and John Nolen, the reigning United States Bowling Congress
Masters champion. Another touring player, Brian Kretzer, failed to make the cut.
In addition to the touring players, four others are former touring players, including runnerup David
Traber. Many local bowlers may remember the storied match when Traber defeated his brother, Dale Traber
for the championship of the PBA National tournament in Toledo in 1994.
Other former touring players included quarterfinalists Ken Abner and Dave D’Entremont; and Brian Himmler.
Billy Oatman, another former tour player also failed to make the cut.
One of last year’s PBA Women’s Series champions, Jodi Woessner of nearby Oregon, made the cash list.
Of the 16 finalists, we have already named 10 current or former touring players. In addition, three
others are regularly on tour and compete weekly in the pre-tournament qualifiers, formerly called the
rabbit squads; and two former champions of the Varsity regional.
Those who attended the tournament were certainly treated to watching some of the greatest bowlers in the
world.
Tourney returns: The Dean Moosman Memorial Team Tournament, presented by the Northwest Ohio Bowling
Proprietors Association will feature a $1,000 firs place prize guaranteed by the NWOBPA, will be at 10
a.m. on Nov. 1.
The event will also provide $1,000 in scholarships awarded to the junior bowlers selected by the
proprietors from the top three teams, $500, $300 and $200, respectively.
Moosman had a passion for team bowling and youth bowlers and this unique tournament honors both.
Entries, $250 per team, are open to all area Northwest Ohio bowlers.
Surviving the game: The four bowlers eliminated in Al-Mar’s "Surviving the Game" with pins
under average were: Brad Simon, 127; Nathan Burks, 105 and Judy Ketner, 100, all of the Eagles league;
