COLUMBUS — Eastwood’s Alyssa Shimel is tied for first place after the first round of the Division II
girls state golf tournament.
Shimel and Morgan Ransom of Gahanna Columbus Academy each shot 73 Friday at Ohio State University’s Gray
Course.
Shimel and Ransom are three shots ahead of the next closest individuals, with three players tied for
third at 76. Three other players shot under 80 on Friday.
The second and final round is today.
“She’s trying to stay calm and play her game,” said Eastwood coach John Cavendish of Shimel. “She’s been
under this kind of pressure before and I think that experience will help her.”
Shimel shot 38 on the front nine and an even-par 35 on the back nine on Friday. She had five bogeys and
two birdies on the par 70 course.
Shimel, a senior, has experience at the state tournament, finishing eighth last season in Division II and
fourth as a freshman in 2006 when there was only one division in girls golf.
Also from Eastwood, Mikayla Young shot an 87 and is tied for 25th among the individuals.
On the boys side in Division III, Northwood’s Louis Fahrbach shot an 85 at OSU’s Scarlet Course and is
tied for 22nd among individuals. Alex Andrews of Gates Mills Gilmour Academy leads the field after
carding a 73.
