Perrysburg tennis has 3 players in district semifinals

SANDUSKY – Perrysburg’s girls tennis team has three players still in the hunt for a trip to the Division
I state tournament.
Sophomore April Weaver at singles, and the doubles team of sophomore Cammy Messenger and junior Megan
Roberts both won two matches at the district tournament Thursday at Sandusky to advance to the
semifinals.
The semifinals, consolation and finals are Saturday at Port Clinton High School with play beginning at 10
a.m. Thursday’s play was moved from Sandusky High School to indoors at Baywinds Racquet Club due to the
weather.
The top two finishers in singles and the top two doubles teams qualify for the state tournament Oct.
23-24 at Ohio State University’s Stickney Tennis Center. By winning the semifinals match on Saturday,
players will qualify for a spot at state regardless of the results in the district finals match.
At singles, Weaver won both of her matches in straight sets, opening with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Marion
Harding’s Allison James. She then beat Anna Scherting of Toledo Central Catholic, 6-3, 6-4, to advance
to the semifinals.
Weaver will face Notre Dame freshman Kerigan McNamara in the semifinals.
Also at singles, Perrysburg senior Samantha Hayes defeated Lindsey Barlett of Findlay, 6-2, 6-1 in the
first round before losing to Notre Dame’s Megan McNamara, 6-1, 6-0 in the second round.
For Bowling Green, senior Beth Vickio defeated Jacki Leizerman of Northview, 6-0, 6-2 in the first round
but then lost in the second round to Kerigan McNamara, 6-0, 6-1.
Also for the Bobcats, junior Maddie Telecky lost her first round match to Southview’s Jessie Coyle, 6-4,
6-0.
At doubles, Perrysburg’s Messenger and Roberts won their first round match on a third-set tiebreaker,
6-2, 4-6, 7-6(6), over Notre Dame’s Megan St. John and Sally Stearns. In the second round, the team
defeated Wapakoneta’s Ricki Oen and Makenzie Klock, 6-2, 6-0.
Messenger and Roberts will face Southview’s Genna Haidar and Anjoli Naik in the semifinals.
Also for Perrysburg, the doubles team of junior Maddy Karnitis and sophomore Erin Reese lost in the first
round to Toledo Central Catholic’s Morgan Delp and Sydney Delp, 6-0, 6-0.
For BG, the doubles team of seniors Stephanie Motsinger and Bethany Hoehner won in the first round over
Alexis Gedeon and Sarah Osborne of Fremont Ross, 6-3, 6-4. The team then lost to Southview’s Anne
Kamenny and Neha Vyas, 6-2, 6-1.
