Youth orchestra opens season

TOLEDO – The Toledo Youth Orchestra will mark its 60th year by debuting a new ensemble at a free concert
Sunday at 4 p.m. in the Toledo Museum of Art Peristyle.
Both the orchestra and the newly formed Toledo Youth Orchestra Sinfonietta will perform.
The program includes a world premiere of "Glass" by Timothy Stulman, a graduate student at
Bowling Green State University. Also on the program will be Johannes Brahms’ "Hungarian Dance No.
5" and Bedrich Smetana’s "The Moldau."
The Sinfonietta was formed this fall to accommodate the growing demand for youth orchestra involvement in
Northwest Ohio and to elevate the level of playing in both groups, according to the orchestra.
According to Dr. Kenneth Thompson, faculty member at BGSU and director of the TYO: "When the Toledo
Symphony assumed management of the Youth Orchestra, we set a goal of dramatically increasing performing
opportunities for all students in the region. We’ve now grown by about 40 percent, and when audiences
see the Sinfonietta on Sunday, they will see and hear this success in action."
There are 133 students combined in both programs. The TYO is directed by Thompson; the Sinfonietta is
directed by Wasim Hawary with assistant conductors Mark Irwin and Bryan Troutman.
