Alleen G. (Smith) Wannemacher, age 89, of Bowling Green, OH, died Monday morning, October 5, 2009, at
Blakely Care Center of Bowling Green, after an 11-year battle with Alzheimer’s disease.
She was born on June 18, 1920, in Silica, OH (Sylvania Township) to James William and Lavinia Belle
(Oates) Smith. She was the only girl in a family of 9 brothers. She married Robert C. Wood and he died
in June 1957. She later married Russell Wannemacher, on January 28, 1961, and he also predeceased her in
January 1994.
Alleen was a lifelong learner. She graduated from Sylvania Burnham High School and attended Davis
Business College. In her 50s she returned to college to continue her business training and rejoin the
workforce. During World War II she was employed by Toledo Steel Products both in the factory and in the
office. She later enjoyed her tenure at BGSU as Supervisor of Transcript Records, for the Registrar’s
Office. She retired in 1983 and became an avid golfer, playing in two leagues and continued her hobbies
of sewing, tailoring, quilting, crafting and crossword puzzles.
She was a 47-year member of a Euchre Club, which led to her "girl" travels in Europe and
Hawaii.
She also enjoyed many trips to the Bahamas and Las Vegas. She was a former member of Blessed Sacrament
Church, St. Patrick’s of Heatherdown, and St. Aloysius Church. Other past memberships included Altar and
Rosary Society, School lunch coordinator for St. Aloysius School, Brownie and Girl Scout Leader, Welcome
Wagon and its knitting group, and bowling on several leagues. Alleen was very athletic and was good at
most sports activities. In her later years she became an avid walker.
Survivors include daughters: Barbara (Dick) Pasquinelli, Maumee; Judy Hogan and Janice L. (Stephen R.)
Peterson, Bowling Green; and Robin (David) Eshelman. Stow, OH; 10 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren
and 9 great-great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her parents, and brothers Walter, Ernest, F.
Carroll, George, Alvin, Virgil, William, Richard and Irvin.
Family and friends will be received on Thursday, October 8, 2009, from 6-8 p.m. at the Dunn Funeral Home.
Funeral Services will be conducted on Friday, Oct. 10, 2009, at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home, with
visitation 1 hour prior to the service. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery, Bowling Green. Rev. Dan
Horner will officiate.
