Southview shuts out Perrysburg

SYLVANIA — There were few positives for the Perrysburg football team Friday night.
Southview dominated play throughout its 28-0 win over the Yellow Jackets, and Perrysburg has lost two
straight games to fall to 4-2 overall and 1-2 in the Northern Lakes League. Southview (4-2, 3-0) is the
only team in the NLL without a league loss.
“We’ve just got to keep on working at getting better and becoming a better football program,” said
Perrysburg coach Matt Kregel. [SEE

Perrysburg committed four turnovers and was out-gained by 219 yards in the loss.
Yet, the ’Jackets trailed only 7-0 at halftime against the defending Division II state champions as
Perrysburg’s defense was able to bend but not break against an athletic Cougar offense, at least for the
first half.
“We really played hard,” Kregel said. “They’re way more athletic than we are. And that’s evident.”
Southview exploded for 179 yards rushing and 21 points in the second half, using its speed on offense to
simply outrun Perrysburg.
The Cougars had 255 yards rushing for the game, led by backup running back Ja’Darian Bowers, who finished
with 99 yards rushing on eight carries and a touchdown, all coming in the second half.
Starting running back Maurice May had 67 yards on 17 carries and running back/quarterback Thomas Stichter
scored two touchdowns with 69 yards on four carries. The Cougars’ other quarterback, De’Nard Pinckney,
had 28 yards rushing and finished 11-of-20 passing for 111 yards.
Stichter’s 48-yard run with 3:16 remaining in the third quarter gave Southview a 14-0 lead. Sixty-two
seconds later, after one of Perrysburg two interceptions and a personal foul penalty, May scored from
seven yards out on a pass from Stichter to make it a three-touchdown game.
“A couple years ago, Perrysburg came to our house and said it was their house. I guess we won it back
tonight,” said Southview coach Jim Mayzes, referring to Perrysburg’s win in Sylvania in 2007.
Perrysburg’s offense had its share of problems, as Southview’s athletic secondary was able to neutralize
the passing game with man-to-man coverage while the Cougars’ front seven made life hard on quarterback
Matt Slocum. The ’Jackets managed only 46 yards on the ground for the game.
“They (Southview) told us, ‘We’re going to play man-to-man and we’re not going to let you run the ball.’
That puts us in a bind,” explained Kregel. “We’re not very fast at running back. When we can’t move the
ball … We’re in trouble, especially against good athletes that can play man-to-man defense and take it
away from us.”
Perrysburg finished with 154 total yards, with only 53 coming in the first half when the ’Jackets managed
just one first down.
“I’m pleased with the zero,” Mayzes said. “We didn’t score as many points as we’d like to score but we
did control the ball some and everybody came out unscathed, so we’re pleased.”
The ’Jackets punted seven times and ran a total of eight plays in Southview territory. Southview took
advantage of good field position throughout the game and was able to control the clock with its offense
on the field for most of the game.
“You just can’t give a team like that with all those weapons the ball on your end of the field,” Kregel
said.
Perrysburg’s Matt Marquette and Tyler Gordon each had an interception on defense, about the only
highlights for the ’Jackets.
Now Perrysburg must regroup after back-to-back losses to Southview and Bowling Green with a game next
week at home against Anthony Wayne (4-2, 2-1).
“We just keep practicing hard. Right now, we’re playing a freshman and four sophomores on defense.
Against a team like (Southview) it’s going to show,” Kregel said. “It’s a one game at a time thing.
We’ve just got to keep working and fighting and getting those younger guys better. We’ll get better
eventually.”
