On Tuesday, the Wood County Sheriff’s Office took a report of a scam that took place through the U.S.
mail.
The victim received a letter from a company called Equity Bank and Trust stating they won a large sum of
money along with a check for a portion of the cash prize. The victim then called the company and was
instructed to deposit the check and send several sums of money through Western Union to several places
in the United States for the taxes of their winnings.
This check from Equity Bank was fraudulent.
If anyone receives any type of letter stating they won a prize, call the Better Business Bureau or their
local law enforcement agency to determine whether the check is legitimate. At the sheriff’s office,
