Martha Jane "Nanie" Gamble, 89, of Bowling Green, died Thursday, August 27, 2009.
She was born February 26, 1920 in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania, to Dr. Harry and Nelle (Herron) Pease.
She graduated from Hood College, Frederick, Maryland, in 1942 and did graduate work in Early Childhood
Development at the Merrill Palmer School in Detroit.
She married Dr. Donald Gamble in 1942 and he preceded her in death on February 15, 1999.
During World War II, Dr. Gamble was stationed at the Naval Base in Coronado, California. During that
period, Mrs. Gamble started two large Naval sponsored day care centers in that community so that the
wives of the soldiers could work in the factories. She was the dietitian and music director for both
schools and the teacher for one.
The Gambles came to Bowling Green in the fall of 1950 where Dr. Gamble began his practice as a family
physician.
She was quite involved in the community, as a founding member of the Wood County Hospital Guild, founding
member and longtime volunteer for the Wheeled Meals Program, past member of the AAUW, the Shakespeare
Roundtable, the Auxiliary to the Wood County Medical Society, and active until recently in the PEO
Sisterhood.
"Nanie" also was a volunteer for the American Cancer Society in Reach for Recovery, she served
as an Elder and a Deacon at the First Presbyterian Church and was a longtime teacher of the pre-school
Sunday school, an active volunteer and frequent presenter of a program on local history during the
Bowling Green Sesquicentennial Celebration. In 1992 she was Outstanding Woman Citizen of Bowling Green.

Surviving are three daughters: Susan (Michael) Halleck, Bowling Green; Gail (Mark) Pittelkow, Rochester,
Minnesota; and Amy (Tom) Cochran, Tipp City, Ohio; one sister: Peggy Emery, Canonsburg, Pennsylvania;
nine grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren; four nieces and two nephews.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday at 4 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 12 noon on Saturday at Dunn Funeral Home. Private interment is at Oak
Grove Cemetery previous to the service.
The family requests that memorials go to the Wood County Hospital Foundation for the bone density scanner
being purchased for the new Women’s Center.
